Well, today I almost crossed the great divide and bought an XT-1 but at the last moment I hesitated and ended up walking out of the store.

My everyday camera is a Canon 5D mk3 and I am the owner of too much Canon glass. Mine's a familiar story, I don't always take my camera with me because it's too heavy and so - no camera no photos. So I decided to buy a Fuji XT-1. I did some research and decided that I'd buy just one lens, not too wide and not too long, after all, this was to be a back-up camera not a replacement. I decided that the 16-55 f2.8 would be a good all rounder so I saved my pennies and by today I had enough of them. So I went to my local store, I handled the camera, thought it was gorgeous, fell in love with it there and then - love at first sight! So what went wrong? I asked the assistant to replace the 18-55 lens already on the camera with the 16-55. Suddenly the cute little Fuji becomes a monster camera! That 16-55 is almost the size of the 16-35 that sits on the end of my Canon.

My question to you Fuji users is: what is your everyday lens? Do you stick with the 18-55? Perhaps you use a prime. Do you have the 16-55 as your only lens?

So, Fuji X users, which lens should I buy?

Perhaps the question is not which lens, but which Fuji. Take a look at the Fujifilm X100T compact. It has a very sharp fixed lens which obviates your lens decision. The camera is well rated. It is solid, but relatively small. There are a number of videos on YouTube that demonstrate its use. A new 3rd-party guide for the camera is scheduled to come out at the end of this month.

Thank you rjaywallace. I appreciate that there are other Fuji cameras out there as well as an abundance of other "smaller" cameras. I had discounted the X100T compact but will revisit.

I normally shoot with Nikon's D800, but I love my X-E1.
Took it and only the kit 18-55 to Europe and would happily do that again- but need a wider lens too.
Tried the X100s but could not live with a fixed length, so I went back to the X-E1. Got a better deal the second time around.
The X-E-2 may be a bit better.

The 18-55 may be a "kit" lens but it's a fantastic lens.
Fuji lenses are not inexpensive, but you do get what you pay for.
Fuji is not new to making photographic equipment and I liked most of their color film better than Kodak.
They took that to heart when making their sensors.
They actually made Hasselblad's X-Pan camera for them along with large format lenses and several innovative medium format cameras.

It's not a Fuji, but I bet you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in most files between an EM5ii with a 12-40 f2.8. It's smaller and ligher than the Fuji.

And then you get the benefit of a High-Res 64meg RAW file if doing studio type work.

Significantly smaller camera with great IQ.
A great contender from another well-established optical/camera company!

Luggerbugs- go try one at a store.

Thanks GoofyNewfie, I was hoping you would respond as a knew you used a Fuji as well as your Nikon. Following my near miss this morning I'm veering towards the 18-55 lens now. It gets good reviews and it's the right size - thanks again.

You can always click on my user name to see my website. Most everything there is shot with the EM1...which would be very similar to the EM5ii. My favorite lens is the 12-40.

Wotcha tosh !!

Definitely buy the X-T1 ..... or the X-T10. Results would be the same as they've both got the same sensor.

And you're right, if you want "small and light" to go with X-Trans picture quality the 16-55 is too big and heavy. As goofy says, the 18-55 lens is a winner all the way. I have one and get great results with my X-T1, whilst still staying "small and light". You'll not be disillusioned with this lens at all. And there are lots of used for sale. The primes are an even better story ...... and staying small and light the 35mm should be in everyone's bag, the 56 is even better. That should do you for the mo !

Taken today with X-T1 and 35mm lens ....... don't usually "do" flowers !

The electronic shutter (you can use manual as well, or there's a setting to use both) will take you to some unbelievably fast shutter speeds at wide apertures in strong light.

f1.4, 1/16,000 sec !!, ISO 200

Well, that flushed you out Geoff, knew I'd hear from you mentioning the XT-1:lol: Anyway, thanks for your input but as I say, I'm not trying to replace my Canon gear I just want something small and manageable for walking around with so it's just a camera and one lens I'm after. I think the XT-1 ticks the boxes with the 18-55 lens but I'm also going to have more of a look at the Olympus OM-D E-M1.

Anyway, great to hear from you my friend and hopefully we can meet up sometime soon. All the best.

Hi Bob ! Yeah, I gathered that you're looking at a Fuji for the purposes you describe. That's why small and easily manageable lenses are important, and the 18-55 will certainly fit the bill.

Just wanted to point you towards Damien Lovegrove, ex-BBC cameraman and now Fuji X-Photographer. There's lots of stuff available from him to help, including this short video about the X-T1 and X-T10 which appeared just the other day .....

Nice of you to comment so favourably, rjay !

One real nice feature of the v.4 firmware upgrade is that, when in full manual exposure mode, you can turn shutter speed dial to the T function and then use the front command dial to control shutter speed ...... and by 1/3 stops if you've set it up that way. Much easier than using the shutter speed dial on top ! And if you're in "electronic" shutter it just keeps going through all those amazing fast shutter speeds when you're shooting wide open ....... and see it all on screen BEFORE you take the pic ..... yeay !
