Suggestions for a good carry around lens for D810

To do what?

Some would say a 50mm 1.4 with its low light capabilities, others something like a 24/70 F2.8 to get the best of a zoom with low light. Others would suggest one of the kit lenses that covers an even greater zoom range.

Really depends on what you want to shoot and under what conditions.

I tend to have the Nikon 28-300mm on my D750 most of the time.

I have a Nikon 18-200mm lens that is my walk around. Maybe someday we could compare images.

Shoot Happens

I think it really depends on what type of photography you shoot. If you walk around, looking for birds, then it is one lens and if you walk around while travelling in cities it is another.
I typically shoot wide instead of long so my walk around lens is the Nikon 24-70 2.8. I have the one that is not VR but at those focal lengths you likely do not need VR anyway. You should be able to pick up one at a good price now that the new VR just came out.
With a camera like the D810, I would suggest you buy the best lens quality you can afford so you can take advantage of the sensor that you have.

If you have a D810, in my opinion, the first lens you should acquire is a 70-200 f/2.8. It will take you more places. Then follow up with a 24-70 f/2.8.

I use the Nikkor 24mm - 120mm F4, I find it's a good all around range for every day shooting.

I think the question needs to be more specific as in carry where and what are you shooting, budget. Primes vs Zooms? It is too broad a question. It is like asking what car should I drive or what should I have for dinner.

I had the 2.8 24-85 for a while and switched to the 3.5 24-85 G (older model without VR) because of improved IQ. I have used this lens since my film days, works great on my D800E and gets "WOW" reviews on my 16x20 landscape enlargements.

The state-of-the-art is the Nikon FX 24-70 and the new 24-70 VR (brand new) by far the professional's choice and just one of the best lenses ever, ever made.

I do carry my camera everywhere and want a lens that will allow me to take pictures of a wide variety of subjects, not have to wonder if I have the specific lens needed for that photo, but one that will give me a good photo opportunity at the time. No a big cumbersome lens, just one I will feel comfortable with. There could be thousands of replays to your question, this is mine. Thanks for the reply

Kind of short on detail to make good recommendations. Are you looking for a general purpose walk-about lens? Will this be your only lens, or part of a kit? How wide and how long do you want to go? And what is your budget?

Assuming you will have a kit of several lenses and this lens will be a general purpose walk-about lens, the 24-120mm f/4 would be an excellent starting place. If budget is an issue, the older 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D is a great lens but you give up a little at both ends. If you need more reach you could consider the older 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G or the newer 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G.
