Suggestions for a good carry around lens for D810
I have a 35-70mm on my D7000 almost all the time. I'll bet it would be even more useful on a full frame camera.
Is that a Nikon or other lens

I use the Nikkor 24mm - 120mm F4, I find it's a good all around range for every day shooting.

35-70mm f/2.8 zoom. Your choice, Nikon or Tamron. Either is a great starting point for pro quality images.
I call this lens "rubber normal". It's slight wide angle to slight telephoto.
If you have a windfall and a G.A.S. attack, a 14-24 and a 70-200 would round out the pro's "holy trinity" of zooms. Throw in a fast 50 and a decent macro, and maybe a fast 85, and you have a good kit.
I have been using a Tamron 28-200 3.5
That sounds like a good lens

Good in great light, for travel. Awful for available light action. So-so, optically.
I have a Sigma 18-200 as my walk-around.

On the D810 you will want a lens of sufficient quality to resolve that sensor. I use the Nikon AF-S 24-120mm F4G VR Nano, its a great all purpose lens and not all that heavy. For lesser sensors I really like the Nikon 28-300mm model, but on sensors above 24MP it starts to really show its flaws.

I like the 24-120mm f/4 on my Df. Also 50mm f/1.4.
I would never suggest anything as each person is different but in this case I think the new 24-70mm f/2.8 VR-E lens match the D810 well. Both for look and function.

That lens is useless on D810 cameras. I would recommend the 24-120 lens as many others here are doing.

I use a Nikkor AF 24-85 f/2.8-4 D on my D610 and get good results, and it has good close range focus to 0.7'. Check one out.
