I once let Microsoft monitor my usage. I forget why, but I guess they were looking over my shoulder for some time. Ended up giving me a gift worth $100.00.
Anyway, I noticed that your error message said something about getting free software from (null). All attempts to search for that brought me to the same information I provided for you before. But there was a suggestion that going into Windows Defender(if you are using that) and forcing a manual update would correct the problem with windows update. It's worth a try.

Thanks. I'll take a look.

before you do anything drastic, call Microsoft technical support. they are very easy to work with and generally very helpful

Thanks. That's a possibility.

My understanding is that i had "reserved a copy of Windows 10 when it become available on July 29th - still a few days away".
Bob,
WINDOWS UPDATE has nothing to do with the release or installation of WINDOWS 10. As recent as last yesterday, I installed updates for my WINDOWS 7 machine for security support. "Update" are not the same as "UPGRADE".
WINDOWS 10 is still scheduled for release on July 29th.
JERRY,
Your problem with downloading updates for WIN7 has to do with your machine's settings or firewall. For some reason, your machine is not allowing the Microsoft server to interrogate your computer and determine what updates are applicable for your system.
I think if you disable your firewall and other protections so MS has permissions, this will allow the MS server to determine what to download and then you'll get the files. Just be sure to re-enable your firewall and protection software after the update is downloaded and installed.
Security updates for WIN7 and WIN8 have not stopped just because WIN10 is being released on the 29th. I just downloaded 2 security updates for WIN7 yesterday and had no difficulties.

I posted this question a couple of weeks ago, and I still haven't found a solution, so I'm giving all of you another chance.
I have a machine running Win7, and I cannot update Windows. When I click on Update Windows, I eventually get a window saying the service is not running.
Jerry.
As recent as 7/28/2015, I have received updates and definition downloads for WIN7.
The most recent are:
UPDATE....KB2952664 date installed: 7/28
Definition..KB231138 date installed: 7/28
All of these have downloaded and installed without problems.

I assume you have restored from a backup dated a while before the problem existed. Given that, my last resort would be to reload the operating system.

Just wait till after tomorrow and see if you still have these update problems. I suspect you are planning on downloading, installing and running WIN10 after it gets released?

My Win7 machine doesn't have the Win10 icon, so that could be a problem. As for your firewall suggestion, I don't use a firewall since I have a router. This Win8 machine updates okay, and the Win7 used to update okay, too.

Jerry - I use a firewall BECAUSE I use a router.

Yes, it is checked. It is checked, but "Stopped."
Jerry, you want to have only the "Windows Update" line checked and then click "enable". Try that. But be sure only the "windows update" line is checked. Otherwise everything will be enabled.

As long as the OS and hardware on this WIN7 machine comply with specs for WIN7 HOME, then they comply with the basic WIN10 upgrade. There's been no additional memory or other prerequisites so you should be able to upgrade to WIN10 as long as the OS copy is properly registered and not a cloned drive from another machine. The preliminary machine check subroutine that MS does checks for proper registration of the OS serial number.
I'd try going to the MS website for updates and downloads and try upgrading after tomorrow. I have no idea why your machine didn't get the "UPGRADE REMINDER ICON" installed in the lower right corner. There's got to be something that blocks your ability to download the updates.
BTW, when using a router, this doesn't make you immune from virus infections on this particular machine even if another machine on this network has anti-virus protection unless your using one specific machine as your server for the network. If that's the case, you may need to direct wire this WIN7 machine and bypass your server to upgrade to WIN10. Just a thought...
Try Start->Control Panel-> Administration Tools->Services and look up "Windows Update".
On mine (which is working) it looks like this:
and this is why I pack mine up and take it down to my local computer guru and let him do the fixing, because if I try to fix it, the end cost will be more than if guru fixed it.
