HI!, coming out in early August from Charleston, SC. Can I get suggestions on locations for sunrise/sunset landscape shots of all kinds.

I love abandoned buildings/towns/mountains/buttes/rivers you name it! looking for suggestions.

Thanks to all!

Arthur, I had to send this to you thru the general UHH discussion because I want to attach a map and couldn't do it in a private message. Santa Fe is FULL of old buildings. There is a river close to the road from Santa Fe to Abiquiu. As a matter of fact, one Ansel Adams (you may have heard of him!) spent an unsatisfactory day photographing that river but at dusk he saw the perfect shot -- Moonrise, Hernandez New Mexico. The route passes through Hernandez. I spent a week at Ghost Ranch in a photography course, a little beyond "downtown" Abiquiu. The Ranch is owned by the Presbyterian Church and has all kinds of interesting courses. Abiquiu is about 100 miles from Albuquerque but well worth the trip. There is an interesting inn in Abiquiu and you could probably arrange lodging and meals at Ghost Ranch.

Pecohen, re hot air balloons - would I see them from the west side of Sandia or the east side of sandia?

Take the 40 to the 25 and go north, you should see them soon after if you are early enough. Sometimes they start at sunup and can only fly for one or two hours in the hot weather. That is on the west side of the mountains.

OK. I've read the responses to this thread and agree with all of them -- New Mexico is a beautiful state (I used to live in El Paso TX which is really "southern NM" for all practical purposes).

But no one has yet mentioned White Sands National Monument -- it's breathtaking.

Coolhoosier: would suggest sunrise or sunset at white sands?

Either are actually good, but sunsets are best since WS is east of the mountains. If you're lucky, at sunset, you'll get a cloud bank stacked up on the west side of the mountains and "leaking" over them to the east side.
