HI!, coming out in early August from Charleston, SC. Can I get suggestions on locations for sunrise/sunset landscape shots of all kinds.

I love abandoned buildings/towns/mountains/buttes/rivers you name it! looking for suggestions.

Thanks to all!

Much of the downtown and governmental buildings are quite walkable and attractive. The central plaza district of Old Town Albuquerque. Many Route 66 references and tie-ins. Many fine restaurants.

Just east of Albuquerque on I-40, take US-14 north on the "Turqouis Trail" to Madrid (Where the Movie Wild Hogs was filmed). Then continue north to Santa Fe and check out Plaza...one of those places you can just point the camera.

Also, north on 14 to the Sandia Crest turn off, then west on the Sandia Creast road for about 10 miles of twisty turns to the crest ( beautiful view of the city at sunset)

Most likely you will take that ride up during the day and you will want to get back to Albuquerque before dark.

But if you want sunset pictures, take the tram up to (nearly) the top of the Crest. There is a restaurant and bar there where you can comfortably wait for sunset and there should be some good opportunities for shooting the sunset outside. Take it easy at the bar though - you will be well over a mile higher than you are accustomed to and alcohol will hit you harder than you might expect.

One other thought - if you get up early, (around 5 a.m.), from anywhere in Albuquerque but preferably on the east side you might get some good shots of hot-air ballons taking off from the Crest.

If you can get north to the Santa Fe area or even further to the Abiquiu area, you'll get fantastic mountain shots (e.g., Pedernal), red and white rock formations, etc.

I generally avoided Albuquerque because of the relatively high crime in the area. But there are great ops there as have been shown. There is a little known road(s) on the other side of the mountain known as the "Salt Missions" road. Take 40 east a bit then turn south on 333/337/55 and look at the signs for some fabulous old Spanish missions that are not tourist traps and great for photos along with the mountains they are against. You reach highway 60 go west back to 25 north if you wish. For a real treat though go south to Las Cruces then to Mesilla (Inside of Las Cruces) where Billy the Kid is from. While there eat at the Double Eagle Restaurant for the best Mexican food in NM by far. Their cheese sauce for chips is to die for. My wife got the recipe from the waitress for use at home. Then Silver City is a short distance away with a gorge carved through the middle of town from a flash flood that wiped out main street and made it a deep river in town with houses that faced the street now on the edge of a small cliff. Enjoy NM there is so much there it takes months to see most of it.

Like Architect said ,then continue south to Mountainair go west on 60 and follow the signs to the "Abo mission ruins" (about 10 miles) Very photogenic flat stone ruins. If you continue west on 60 after Abo you will come to a pass through the mountains just after "Dripping Spring" when you are in this are if you're lucky you will spot wild mountain goats (or Dahl sheep) . I'm not sure of their official name.
As you drop down on 60 look to the North from this vantage point, when the light and/or clouds is right the 'vista' of the Manzanita Mountains can be breath taking. Where ever your travels take you in New Mexico you will find a constantly changing and eye catching view of natures best. Enjoy!

We just got back from out there and here is a tip or two. From about the end of Oklahoma, on US 40, when the signs say rest rooms , they are not really. You have to go find a gas station. If you have a navigation capability in your vehicle with a rest room notifier , more times than not you will be disappointed. Also for some reason diesel fuel is cheaper from NM to the coast. Have a nice trip. It is real nice scenery.

Go to the airport and photograph the sign that gives the altitude of the airfield. Give this your best effort as this will be proof for you to show all that Albuquerque NM. is higher than Denver, CO. Most people do not believe this, you will have proof. Have fun, SPF 87 is advised.

Definitely, definitely take the tram!
Also hit Santa Fe and Taos if you can.

Oh!!!!!!!!! Forgot to ask. has anyone done night shots of the milky way? Where would be a good place to find total darkness for long exposure say 30 sec without city lights interfering??
