Keeping Your Photo Locations Secret

While I have seen many say it is "selfish" to do this, please consider the other side. You are talking about publishing the location, not just telling a friend. It also depends on where you live. In a city with millions, publishing specific info will shortly find your spot overrun due to social media. I have seen it happen over and over. Many will NOT be respectful (the whole entitlement thing) and your spot will be ruined. I am very selective on who I share with. Once I was with a small group of 10-12 and one saw me shooting a small (special) insect from afar. Within 5 minutes, everyone came rushing over and I was soon pushed from my relaxed shooting from all shoving their cameras in. Asking all to step back while I continued, then feeling pressured to move was not something I care to experience on a regular basis. Although I did not have a problem sharing, I worked to find it while all just stood around and I would have preferred my time to finish. Just my personal opinion and preference and why I shoot alone. Just because another is a Photographer, does not mean they will share your respect and style.

I would not share the specific location of peoples homes, but anyplace else I'll gladly divulge.

I often find the "backstage" shot of some of these premium locations to be more interesting than the shots we think we want (which everyone else has often taken as well)

The Seven Sacred Pool at Haleakala Park; Maui

What was going on behind me while making the photos of the Seven Sacred Pools

I read an article last night about keeping your favorite photo locations secret, rather than publishing them along with the images. The idea is to keep tourists away and to prevent other photographers from horning in on your favorite photo spot. I'd post the link, but that site isn't allowed on UHH - "too much self-promotion by Vanelli."

I've never been inclined to keep a photo location secret. How about you?

About the only way I can think of to find a "secret" photo location would be to put on the spelunking gear and find an unexplored cave. Seriously I could care less if someone goes to a location that I photographed. In fact many of my photos are geo-tagged so others can go to them and enjoy like I did.

I think generally, who cares who knows. The only exception I can think of is if I have asked and received permission to go on someone's property and it was granted because the owner was nice. I would not want everyone and their families going out to shoot that location and take advantage to the property owners generosity. I know I will be respectful of others property but I can't speak for people I do not know. If they find it themselves, that is fine and nothing I can do about it but I wouldn't want to give everyone directions.

There is a web site here called Hidden San Diego that I go to often to find, uh, hidden San Diego. Unfortunately, she wants money in order to reveal where these hidden San Diego spots are. Instead of sending her money, I just look at her pictures and descriptions and then head on over to Google. Google's never let me down so far.........LOL

That's right up there with not sharing a recipe you've made that other people have enjoyed and would like a copy. The only time I could see keeping a photo location a secret is if it was of an endangered species of plant life or rare birds or animals.
