Has anyone had this problem?

My SX50 is 2 years old and I have a problem with the lens. When I turn it on the lens pops out, the light on the LCD display goes on momentarily then everything turns off, but the lens won't retract. So of course it doesn't work and I need to put it in for repair on Monday.

Do you think it is worth fixing or should I buy another? I would love a dslr but as a senior lady they are too big and heavy for me which is why I love my SX50. Is the SX60 an improvement?

(I'm sure you no doubt checked the condition of the battery?)
It depends of course, what Canon might charge. I love my SX-50 and should anything go wrong with it, I would do my best to replace it with another SX-50. Never have had a problem with it in over two years. I read a few days ago where someone bought one (I think online), for $179.00.

--------------------------------------------------------------------I agree with Haroldross's opinion in the link, he's right on. In fact I like most things he says about Cameras. I had the SX50, and was disappointed in the SX60 when I traded up. I got the SX60 because I wanted an external mic jack, and liked the feel of the body better, and other upgrades like better LCD, viewfinder, and configuration of the buttons. But the longer zoom and IQ was disappointing. I had the SX40 and think it the best of the 3. It was only 35X zoom but the pics were much better. It lacked many of the upgrades I wanted with the SX50, even more in the SX60, but the zoom and IQ was superb in comparison.

Canon was selling refurbished SX50's for $179. May be worth looking into. SX50 is a pretty darn nice camera that produces great images.

I have to 60, a friend the 50. Both of us are very happy. Great photos. Love the features, a list too long to mention. $179 for a 50 refurb is a great deal. I paid $499 for my 60 but it's worth it. Love the in-camera HDR.

Rjwallace! You are an angel! Yes! It was a memory card problem!

I put one in from my old G12 after reading your post and voila! It works! All I have to do is buy a new one! I love my SX50 and get some fab photos so it would be very hard forme to go researching new cameras again.

Thanks to EVERYone with all the helpful advice. Even the negative advice I take on board. It all helps to give an overall view.

Yay! Yay! Yay!

I will say it again. There are many helpful people here on this site. Weeding through the negativity of some can bring out the real benefits. Glad your problem was solved.

Yes, the sharing of the bad card prognosis was excellent. This is a good source of info from some pretty good people but there are some I would not have a friends.

Check with UHH users Bob Yankle, sleepydrdr and Bee7474 for information on the SX60. And here's a topic from last week:

Have you checked with Canon service about the issue? Is that who you're sending it to? They might offer you a refurbished at reduced price in lieu of repair (not sure they repair these). However, they have also periodically offered a refurbished, full one-year warranty, on the 50 on their website for $179. I bought a "back-up" for that price, and several folks on UHH were able to snag one, as well.

As to Wesso's comment re plastic toy, suggest folks check out UHH member Tony Britton's photos :)

I have this camera as well. Linda from Maine and Tony Britton take fabulous photos with it.m I, however, am still trying to achieve that quality

Have you checked if your battery is charged?

That was my FIRST thought!! One of the classic issues with cameras on a camera store display is you turn them on, the lens extends and then they shut off without retracting BECAUSE THE BATTERY is SO LOW!!..

That is why I ALWAYS carry a couple of spare FULLY CHARGED batteries anytime I am out with my SX50 and/or SX40 and even my older Kodak super zoom!!

I'm afraid that your grossly negative & biased comments fade into insignificance, when compared to the positive comments & praise from masses of SX50 owners, including myself. Are you so completely full of yourself that you believe that you are the only one who is right in your assessment, & everyone else is wrong? After viewing your photos, it does prove one thing--it confirms that you are a lousy photographer.

WessoJPG is just one of the several users on here that LOVE to BASH anything in the non-DSLR category!! They have such big egos and yet cannot compare to a number of the excellent SX50 posts!!

No complaints with my SX50 especially based on the $199 I bought it for;

Yup and the SX50 was too smart for you!! You don't deserve that good a camera!!

Boy you are a flamer and really into yourself aren't you? Many, many folks here have written very positive comments about the SX-50; very few have written negatively. Just because YOU had a bad experience with one does not make it a bad camera (and based sales volume it isn't) nor does it give you the right to disparage others who have used it with great success. I suppose all of your pics are SOOC and never photoshopped?

I have both, the 60 is larger and harder for me hold steady so for now my 50 is taking better pictures, probably not the camera fault, but unsteady hands and hate tripod, however must give in and start using one. If you have used the 50 a lot, it probably be cheaper to replace. Good luck

I had almost the same problem with my SX50 and it was the battery. I put a new fully charged battery in and it has worked fine since!
