Has anyone had this problem?
My SX50 is 2 years old and I have a problem with the lens. When I turn it on the lens pops out, the light on the LCD display goes on momentarily then everything turns off, but the lens won't retract. So of course it doesn't work and I need to put it in for repair on Monday.
Do you think it is worth fixing or should I buy another? I would love a dslr but as a senior lady they are too big and heavy for me which is why I love my SX50. Is the SX60 an improvement?

Had one for a week. Went to review photos. An icon popped up saying unidentifiable subject. The it proceeded to wipe out all my pictures. Boxed it up and returned it to canon for a refund. Plastic Toy.
LOVE my SX50 and from what I've read it is better than the SX60 check back the last week or so for some comparisons
Check with UHH users Bob Yankle, sleepydrdr and Bee7474 for information on the SX60. And here's a topic from last week:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-321476-1.htmlHave you checked with Canon service about the issue? Is that who you're sending it to? They might offer you a refurbished at reduced price in lieu of repair (not sure they repair these). However, they have also periodically offered a refurbished, full one-year warranty, on the 50 on their website for $179. I bought a "back-up" for that price, and several folks on UHH were able to snag one, as well.
As to Wesso's comment re plastic toy, suggest folks check out UHH member Tony Britton's photos :)

The Nikon Df is a full frame DSLR that is thinner and lighter than other DSLRs. It has the same sensor as the Nikon D4 and has no video, no pop-up flash, no scene modes.

Hooray for Tony, anyone can Photo Shop photos, I've seen Cell Phone pictures that were outstanding. I have a Canon G10 that I love wouldn't trade it for 4 SX 50s. I had one for a week that did me in (quote)

First, have you considered simply trying your SX50 with a different SD card installed? Could be that when you turn the camera on, it looks for the memory card, and if it can't read the one that's there, it may assume that there isn't one and shuts down.
If that isn't the problem, I would strongly suggest with others here that you talk to Canon. I believe SX50 refurbs are back on sale at $179 from Canon. That may wind up being cheaper than sending it in for repair.
I bought my SX50 as a Canon refurb and have found it to be a high quality, fun camera to use in a variety of circumstances.

I'm afraid that your grossly negative & biased comments fade into insignificance, when compared to the positive comments & praise from masses of SX50 owners, including myself. Are you so completely full of yourself that you believe that you are the only one who is right in your assessment, & everyone else is wrong? After viewing your photos, it does prove one thing--it confirms that you are a lousy photographer.

Thanks.jealous will get you every time.
Rjwallace! You are an angel! Yes! It was a memory card problem!
I put one in from my old G12 after reading your post and voila! It works! All I have to do is buy a new one! I love my SX50 and get some fab photos so it would be very hard forme to go researching new cameras again.
Thanks to EVERYone with all the helpful advice. Even the negative advice I take on board. It all helps to give an overall view.
Yay! Yay! Yay!
Everyones heard the one about the photographer getting told you must have a wonderful camera, i guess there is a corollary to that somewhere in this thread :)
WessoJPG you do not know what you are talking about.I do not own the SX50 but I have seen pictures from it that were as good as any DSLR.Be aware SLRs will soon be finished. Point and shoot are getting so very7 good that huge lens will not be necessary.

I own an SX40, I like it and have read the specs on the SX50 and 60. I for sure think the SX50 is the better camera.
Because you said that you would like a DSLR but you find them too big and heavy, I compared my Olympus OM-D E-M10 to my SX40. The Olympus E-M10 is markedly smaller. They seem to weigh about the same. The E-M10 is of metal construction and even though it's smaller, that's why they weigh about the same.
I chose the E-M10 for its size, better image quality, but more than any other reason was to have a camera that was easy to manually control.
As far as Auto Mode on cameras goes, all I can say is "Thank you very much, but I prefer to screw up pictures all by myself."
