When I misspell a word, Windows underlines it in red. Right clicking will let me select the correct spelling or add the word to its dictionary. Is there a way I can edit that dictionary or add words myself?
I use WordPerfect, and I can edit that dictionary.

You can thank Bill Gates for ramming MSOffice down everybody's throat when Windoze entered the scene. Otherwise we might all be using Linux/Unix and WordPerfect would be king of the hill in word processors.
Thanks. I'm getting closer. I found three dictionary files in Users/Name/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Spelling/em-US
There I found three "default" files, and I think the .acl file is the one I have to open and edit. My next step will be finding a way to open it. Notepad doesn't see anything there. I installed Office, but Word doesn't open it.
Well Jerry you can always do what do, spell it the you want and use white out over the red lines. LOL
Actually you right click on it and it will come up with the correct spell in there minds or can also add the new word to there dictionary.
Each application may have its own dictionary. IE. Firefox and Thunderbird each have dictionarys separate from each other and Word. I doubt WINDOWS is doing the corrections.
I was going to look at the files in the directory you referenced, but I don't have "spelling" directory under Microsoft. I have Office 2003.
If you don't want to be hostage to Gates, consider LibreOffice. It's free and quite functional.

I doubt that would open the Windows dictionary.

Right, but I would like to edit the dictionary.
When you right click on the word in question you have the option to add the word to the dictionary. I you have a lot of words just make a document with them it and then add.

Jerry,
When you open "WORD" and it shows FORMATS, you can use the search feature to find "dictionary" and go to the bottom for "OPTIONS". This opens up a menu that describes your preferences for word correction and dictionary options to be used.
There, you can decide if you want the standard spellings or add words and alternate spellings to your dictionary.
Unfortunately, this dictionary doesn't work for website entries like UHH since they are not subject to the "WORD" look up table or there would be a lot fewer spelling and grammar mistakes in thread responses.
