Frenchcoast--I make my humble apology. I had only limited experience with the A-4 Skyhawk.
I served 3 years with one squadron only, VA-55, homebased in Lemoore NAS, Ca. Upon my arrival they were transitioning from C to E & F models. The newer planes had the ECW hump already mounted as well as the dogleg fuel probe; so,I can't speak for other squadrons or other CAG's.
In the world of the military there is always room for the and, if,but, or maybe.
I never worked on a jet, mostly under them. I primarily loaded bombs and fixed/maintained weapons systems.
I thought the A-4 was a fine bird.
I also lost crewmates to combat and mission mishaps.

No Bart, absolutely no need for apology what so ever. Guess I'm still touchy about those days and what we all had to go through. I stay in touch with a lot of the guys and we all find it difficult to handle ridicule. Don't want to get on that rant. It's like I said no apology needed. Stay the course !

Here's a photo of me on the flight deck of the USS Hancock. Those are Shrike missiles on the cart. The Air Force called SAM suppression Wild Weasel missions the Navy called it Iron Hand. Under the wing of jet #417 is one 500# general purpose bomb and a pair of Rockeye cannisters. Rockeyes open like a clam shell in mid-air releasing dart shaped bomblets in a shotgun pattern into the target.
This is what the war was for us. No new clothes and equipment for the camera crews. We patched our inflatable life vests with duct tape until a better one could be found. What the H**L people, duct tape should have been called the best battle instrument of the Vietnam War.
It fixed combat aircraft and its crews.

I used to be a USAF crew chief in the 21st TASS and the 310 TAS in 1972. Here are a few pictures scanned from my negatives. Both airplanes were FAC's (Forward Air Control) in the 21st TASS.
