I bought Gary Friedman's book on the SONY NEX 5 and could be happier with it. It's a big book or PDF but it's kind of easy to learn from. He first gets you started in the areas you need know the most and builds on that as he goes. By the time your finished you feel pretty confident that you know what you are doing.
Another feature of the book is that besides just technically teaching you how to operate the camera he blends in the "whys" and "hows" of using each features to get the kind of results you want.

I'd bet there are a number of good "crash" videos on youtube.

Thanks, that's a thought I didn't think of. I would like to find a good video I can buy so I can take it with me when I travel.

I have seen many threads on Photography books and found much good information.
My specific question is books targeting a specific camera like a "Field Guide to The Nikon D3300". Are these kind of specific books worthwhile?
I got the "Nikon D5200 for Dummies" book a while after I got my camera and started working through the manual. I still go into the manual for many things but the "dummies" book was a much easier read, covered the same material and also pointed out how certain options can interact that the manual never touched.
There are a bunch of members here on UHH that swear by video tutorials, and if that's how they learn best then more power to them. Personally, I get much more out of a book than a video. Try them both and go with what works best for you.

Videos are good, but nothing like a field guide to use when in the field, or on location. They are easier and quicker than the manual.

There are usually several written by different authors. Pick the style of the author you like best and buy his/her book. I like the David Busch and Darryl Young books myself.
