I've been shooting a Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 VC USM for about 2 years now. The image quality is very good, and better than the comparable Canon L lens. Of course Canon has just come out with a version with IS, but it is a f4 lens. Tamron lenses are as sharp as the Canon "L" quality, as long as they are in the "SP" category. I know your talking Nikon, but you may want to look closely at the Tamron, it also has a 6 year warranty.

Ray, before you dismiss one of the greatest lenses available, I would ask what is it that you want to do with the lens? What kinds of things do you shoot? The IQ of this lens is considered outstanding throughout it's range. There is a reason why it is considered one piece of "The Trinity" or "Magic Three". Maybe since Stan does not use his much, he would be willing to sell it to you at a bargain price.

purpose of the lens is to do pix at sports, vacation, cruises, and to some extent weddings. I am also considering a wide angle lens perhaps a 20mm

To cover all of these well, it may take more than one lens. Maybe you should rent a 24-70 mm f2.8 to see if it meets your needs. Otherwise, there are some lenses that may be better suited to your needs. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is a great lens, but over $2000., and may be better for sports applications. So I'd Google "camera and lens rentals" in your area to see what you can try out. Most places will rent by the week or longer. Good luck.
