Sometime ago I had posted seeking members opinion/advise on purchasing a new lens for D610 camera. I am interested in 28-70 f/2.8 lens. The Nikon brand is almost $1,800.00 - I had seen suggestions and recommendations on the blog about Tamron or Tokina lens (not sure which) that are very buy and performed well. Looking forward to hearing from members.

Dxomark has tested the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 higher then the Nikon. I have one and love it.

Good morning Hollis,
I purchased a new D610 last fall and posted the same question as you just did. I found a fellow hogger who sold me his gently used Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 for less than $1.5K and I am very happy with it. I had tried a friend's Tamron version and could not tell any difference in the images. The one thing that you should consider is resale value and reliability. If you plan on keeping the lens for more than 5-10 years, this ma not mean much to you, but even a used Nikkor holds it's value better than any 3rd party lens. Just my 2 cents.....

Search YouTube.com for the Nikon 24-70 2.8 and you will find expert comparisons of these lenses....and in depth.

I do not know anything about the Tamron. If you will consider refurbished, sometimes you can find them at Cameta Camera or on the Nikon USA website at a savings. Both sites carry factory refurbished units and they are USA models. Nikon did have a 10% off sale going on this weekend, not sure if it expired yesterday or today. One other thought may be to consider the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens, which gets pretty great reviews, especially by David Busch. Not knowing what you are shooting may have already precluded this from your list. The lens is about $600 less than the 24-70 mm f2.8, new, and even more as a factory refurbished unit. I agree with others about the resale value of Nikkor lenses, if that matters to you.

Hollis, I was just on the Nikon web site. They have a Nikon 24-70 mm f/2.8 refurbished lens at $1350, inclusive of the 10% off, through today. I have purchased a D610 and my 70-200mm f/4 lens from them as refurbished units and they look and function as new. If you want to consider the 24-120mm f/4 lens, it will run you about $810 inclusive of the discount on this site. Good luck with your decision.

I have one--almost never use it--It isn't long enough to be useful, nor wide enough to be interesting--very limited focal range
