Film Developing?

I got out my old Minolta Maxxum 7000 recently and shot a roll of color film. I took the film to Walgreen to get it developed. They send it out and will have it ready in a week. It seems these days you get the prints but do not get the negatives back. Instead they provide a CD with .jpg images. I have no idea at what resolution they scan the pictures to generate these digital files. Cost for a roll of 36 is $15.95.

Does anyone here shoot film any more? Is there a better place to get the film developed maybe via mail order?

I would demand the negatives!!! and in my experience the scans are optimized for a 4x6 or 5x7 print.

I would ask for the negs and no cd then scan them yourself.

They refuse because they don't want to pay shipping back to the store. So cheap but what do you expect. Walmart is the same way from what I here. Use a real lab

Try Samy's in Santa Barbara. I remember they used do charge $5 per roll of 35mm. I then would scan the film yourself

HMM,

You may have selected a Walgreen's local store where they did not install a 1 hour photo processing station. According to their web site they still do provide 1 day processing, film, and CDs. You need to select the store that is old enough to have a film processing and printing station installed at the end of the front display counter.

Look for older Walmart, Sam's, COSTCO, CVS, and other nation wide chain stores where they used to have in house 35mm film processing and printing. The one venue that seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur is the stand-alone 1 hour photo processing kiosk and stand alone stores.

If nothing, within 100 miles, is available then Google for 35mm film mailers, I used to use these in the military for all my Kodacolor film rolls.

How does one scan a color negative to get a .jpg image. Special scanner and/or software needed?

About Walgreens film processing:

Some Walgreens will give you negatives, but only if they do the processing at that very store. The Walgreens stores that do not have processing facilities send the film out to the nearest Walgreens that does, but the negatives are not sent back to the original store - prints and scans only.

Ask the clerk or managager about the address of the Walgreens store to which they send film processing orders. Perhaps it is not that far away and you can take your film directly to that store location instead. If you do drop off there, remember to give instructions to return the negatives. Write it clearly on the form, and tell the clerk in charge as well. Do as if your very life depended on the negatives!

Interesting that Walgreens sent the film out. Our local WG does the processing in house and I have them make me a contact sheet only and return the negatives. I guess that each store is different though.

Those negs are your property and they have no right to keep them. DEMAND them in a loud voice especially at rush hour time. Or demand your money back. (after you have copied the files from the CD of course)

I'd rather say the hell with them and process my own. Which I do. When I did use a lab I used a professional lab. It keeps them in business. Drug stores have little to lose from a lack of film processing.

If they are shipping the prints and a CD back to the store, I can't imagine a few strips of film would add anything to the shipping costs. My guess is, they will provide you with the negatives if you asked. They don't have a right to not return your negatives. It is your property. Seems like it would be akin to you taking a manuscript to Kinko's to get copies made and them refusing to give you your original back.
