Is mirrorless "better" than DSLRs these days?

All this has me thinking about replacing my DSLR gear with mirrorless.

Mirrorless cameras are a great solution for convenience, weight and portability. Where they are lacking is in the options available in lenses and accessories, though the lenses that are available are generally of very high quality. Sensor noise is an issue on large prints, and some shooters have issues with electronic viewfinders. In the image quality department it is far behind what a full frame camera can produce, but close to what an advanced cropped sensor camera can do - primarily because of the high quality of the lenses. Mfgr's of consumer level DSLRs for some reason do not invest the R&D into making pro-quality optics for their cameras. Mirrorless mfgrs recognize that it is an opportunity and have stepped up to the plate. I am a fan of NEX bodies, but not their system. I prefer the Olympus offerings - even if the sensors are a little smaller.

Don't rush! They said this new Nikon will be NO EVF or may needs an add-on finder! I don't like the way they bring out the new product with out considering what people really need. If it has no view finder even it has the add-on one, I will not even look at it!

Canon have done this. I have a Canon 600D and am looking into Mirrorless because of size and weight. So Canon bring out a mirrorless camera and it's got no view finder. I too would not buy a camera without a view finder.

I too am a fan of the Olympus micro 4/3 system. In body image stabilization and an EVF does it for me. I own an E-M10 and really like it. In time the smaller Oly sensors will improve with more pixels and provide better image resolution. The current sensor meets or exceeds my current needs. However, when that happens I may move up to the newer model. By that time, I will most likely have acquired all of the m43 lines I want.

They are getting more and more popular, but they do not surpass the better DSLRS in image quality.

Hey Mac, I have a couple of mirrorless, down from my Nikon D50.
Here is a review on one I just got.....I don't have the big bucks to go for 'pro' models but this really does a nice job. Panasonic and olympus are the only two w/ interchangable lenses AND I bought a 17.00 adapter to fit my minolta md LENSES, and now I have quick a 'stock' of various lenses to use. Only problem is you have to shoot in manual mode. But those film lenses were made like sherman tanks and I ESPECIALLY LOVE that the aperature ring is ON the lens, not in some menu. Anyway here is the link for a short review.

Does the Fuji have leaf shutter? I doubt that.

Bebu - just do the research into Fuji X-Series and you'll find your answer ! Give ya a clue ...... leaf shutter's built into the lens which is an integral part of certain Fuji X-Series cameras.

Quality keeps going up along company investment in more lenses to go with systems. This is where the future seems to be. It wasn't long ago the that camera in phones were a joke. New smart phones like the recent iPhone and Sony Xperia can be counted on for some really fine work. Those of us heavily invested in older DSLRs can afford to wait. Those who are just making investments have a harder choice. The R & D seems to be mostly in mirror less.

I couldn't spring for a model w/ a view finder but absolutely find one is necessary in most 'sunlight' situations. So I did opt for the VF2 attachable viewfinder and it works just fine for me. The VF4 is way overpriced. I know most that use a point and shoot camera seem to get use to pointing in the direction you want and clicking......I prefer the viewfinder.
You have a good one there.....I have a Panasonic G5 and olympus PL 5 and PM 2.

You can check out this honest critique on You Tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wM_5nROeawue

I have used Nikon for 43 years, recently bought the Sony a6000. I think mirroless will be the way of the future just because of the weight and cost. The images are fine and this year at the WPPI, Sony mirroless won several awards, so I think that speaks for itself. My prediction is that you will see Nikon and Canon technology heading in that direction just because its what the consumer wants. Lighter, budget, ISO, stabilization, ability to use your existing lenses, off camera flash is awesome, electronic viewfinder, focus peaking, sensor size, built in hotspot wifi. They will have to improve the battery life, that is my biggest gripe but it is easy, at 20+ dollars a battery, to just swap it out. IMO Nikon and Canon will be adopting some if not all of this technology as soon as possible.

Oh the other thing I love about the a6000 is that I can remote control it from my iphone.

The only problem I have with the NEX 5T is the flash. The flash it came with is a toy. I will eventually buy another flash but as I plan to move to the A6000 someday soon I might wait to buy a more suitable flash if I cannot adapt one to both cameras now.

I am not a professional but I am reading about more and more professionals switching at least part-time to something like the A6000 so I assume that the mirroless cameras are going to get a stronger and stronger audience.

I use my camera mostly on trips, for street photography more often when I'm out riding my motorcycle' I usually carry it in a flip open leather camera cover mounted on an over-the-shoulder strap so, in terms of convenience it's about as close to point and shoot as you can get. For those reasons the smaller, lighter mirrorless camera is the only way to go for me.

Technically speaking I don't know why any camera would still have a mirror mechanism in them at this point. If there is any real merit in that design I haven't fathomed it so far.

I havent met a built-in or kit flash that wasn't a joke. While I do have external flashes (3 of them), I much prefer to shoot with natural light or fast glass with a bump in ISO.
