Thanks Bruce. Every time I venture a guess about an ID, I usually miss the mark. This looks a bit like the "Black-Headed Grosbeak" in my bird book.

This afternoon I was observing a new mockingbird that just flew out of its nest and it had the dark specks on its breast just like this one. The adult mockingbird doesn't look like that so you may be looking at a fledgling Black Headed Grosbeck

The first two shots are the mystery bird which I hope someone can ID since I'm usually wrong. The sparrow and female oriole are included since they are all different from what I've been shooting (Golden Crowned Sparrows and Hummingbirds).

I am with all the others on the ID of the bird as being an immature female black headed Grosbeak but the shot that grabbed me was the Oriole.

Thanks so much Corolyn. I appreciate the ID information. The Oriole was shot in weird light, and I was lucky to get any detail.

I think it has been identified, but I still appreciate the compliment Sue. Thanks for looking.

Great set Vicki! Looks like a White- crowned to me, but sure someone has already identified it. I'm so far behind the bird may have died of old age by now!

:-D Thanks for taking time to visit SC. I think everyone decided it's a "Black-Crowned Grosbeak."

Very nice shots Vicki, but I'm not sure of your mystery bird. With the shape of its bill I would think it would be in the sparrow family but have not the foggiest idea. Always enjoy your post, keep up the good work.

Hi Vicki...I recognized the Grosbeak beak...but we don't get the Black-headed Grosbeak here. Great shots of the Grosbeak and the others

Thanks for stopping by and the moral support Norm. The mystery bird is believed to be a Black-crowned Grosbeak. There is a sparrow in the mix, too, but I was more interested in getting an ID for the first two shots.

Thank you Jan. I hadn't seen this bird here before, however I may not have been paying attention before I started trying to get shots of the different birds that visit. I haven't seen it since.
