The comparison uses MSRP. The G1 X refurbished from the Canon web site is below your $500 budget by $170. Look again. I see you mentioned that you don't want to consider refurbished. You should reconsider. Many from UHH, including myself, regularly buy refurbished and have never had an issue.

I'm a big fan of refurbished cameras - now on my third one and no problems ever - at least with Nikons and going back to film days.

Your comment is very helpful and I appreciate it. I realize the difference in sensors, yet I'm constrained by budget, so I've been trying to determine what model under $500 would be best for me based on the criteria I set. If budget was not an issue, my first choice could be the GX-1 mk II, but that's almost double the cost of the G16. And, since most of my "serious" photography is done with my Pentax K3 (an truly outstanding DSLR), I have to keep the cost of a casual P&S within bounds.

Should be able to pick up G1X for 499...or if you can refurb 349 until 3/31 Canon 1 year.G1X has the large sensor. Can see my post is redundant now sorry

I use a Canon G15 and SX60, depending on lighting and lens considerations. Both are exelent.

Good point. But as you know, when someone asks for camera suggestions, the responses keep coming. Some of the input has been helpful, as you say, but some has not. My criteria were specific, yet I received replies that were outside of that criteria. For example, I'm not interested in mega zoom. I want a viewfinder. etc. It looks that my two choices are the Canon G16 and the Fuji X30 (both under $500). If a new Nikon P7800 was under $500 (NOT a refurbished one), it could be a first choice.

I have just returned from the lake where i adjust fishing lures and I took some pictures with my Canon G10, Hope you dont mind me showing you some I don't see how they could be much better. Hope this helps you.

Dont try this without a view finder

Normally, I don't want shots posted on my thread, except for when I'm asking for opinions on different camera. The shots you posted are very similar to the shots I got from my Canon G9, which is damaged beyond repair and now trying to replace. The major advantage of the Nikon P7800 for me is the auto panorama feature, but the cost is about $100 more.

Your shots are quite OK: this thread is based on my requesting opinions and your images very well support your opinion, and I thank you for them. Its only when I post images in the Photo gallery that I don't want others to post their own images.

I said I was OK with your posting pictures on an opinion thread. I even thanked you for them. So, what's your problem! You need to take your venom to The Attic!

i use the Fujifilm x100s and love it. i agree the FFx100t is also outstanding, but there are some wonderful comparable cameras. i would go rent several before you make your decision. good luck.

Just to add to the choices, I have owned a Panasonic Lumix-FZ50 for about 6 or so yrs., (this model is not made any more). I bought it because of the lens maker, but every part of this camera is good quality and useful features, like RAW, RAW + JPEG, JPEG, and most all of the features found on a DSLR. Todays Panasonic Lumix cameras are very good quality and features. And the photographs it has produced are excellent quality. To have a compact camera with a F2.8 lens from 28mm. to 600mm. is a VERY useful camera. You SHOULD look at some and consider one. Of course a new DSLR, like my Sony A77, have features and quality that is hard to match. But your wanting a camera that is not as expensive and will do most of the time. And you won't need any other lenses to carry, change, and then get dirt onto the sensor.
Give a Panasonic Lumix a try. I'll bet you will not be disappointed.
