You discovered the reason I retired form portraiture. A lady (and I use the term loosely) wanted her head in a profile while everyone else had their heads turned slightly off camera. After several shots the way she wanted I attempted to turn her head to match the others explaining the reasoning behind the change. She informed me it was her picture and this is the way she wanted it. I then explained to her that it was my profession and I don't shot crap. We both got want we wanted. Sometimes you have to make a point to get people to listen.
You discovered the reason I retired form portraitu... (

The wedding I went to recenly had a photographer who was bossy, overpowering, didn't put up with any horseplay and turned out some of the best portraits I have ever seen.

Thanks Sher ............only light here today is light snow
one more thing occurs to me Sher and that would be to either move them or move me in order to have the sea and sky in the background and not the buildings.

And now, I will ask your help on what I could have done differently on this group photo...... Lots of shadows on faces and such... What would you have done??

Sometimes if the photographers don't not take over the people will run them ragged. There are always people at the reception who want special pictures taken not realizing that the bride and groom are the ones paying for the extra work.

you mean harsh direct flash...?
well depending on the flash you could bounce it...if you have a wall or something or one of those round white things that people use to bounce light.
there are probably directions for adjustments you can make to set flash power according to distance from subject
I remember someone suggestion a hanging a white cloth hanky over a flash to diffuse it.
I don't have the patience for it so I just try to work the light with the light triangle of settings ...ISO, shutterspeed and aperture.

Good question...I would think that in this case, because you are outside, it would not matter as an on camera flash would mostly dissipate.
Can anyone help us with this thought?

Aside from wardrobe criticism, my first reaction would have been to close people in turning sideways, allowing you to get in closer and then use a flash to fill in shadows on faces. To me, light at their back is better then facing right into the sun with squinting eyes.

The light on the first one was from a window, the 2nd from a hotshoe flash.
double post is wishful thinking to be back in sunny florida oh so soon
I think the best way to capture light is to always be looking for it.
Still working up my Florida shoot and playing around with a free download of presets and filters from Perfect Effects 9
indoors with spot lights section of a chihuli instalation with colorful light shadow
early afternoon looking for a place for lunch i liked the lines and shadows and applied some preset too
outdoor direct light prob around 3pm
sunrise underexposed...still exploring presets

Sher, I don't mind the side lighting, however by reversing the order of the people (shortest on the sunny side) the taller would not cast shadows on them. Some times it takes a little adjustment and moving the people around to get the lighting near even.
spread them out ... seems bunched up ... use the space
and all catch some light 8-)
