As other here have already said...first, learn to use your camera. Practice a lot. Learn to use the histogram on your camera to improve exposure. I always (or at least whenever possible) bracket my shots to be sure I have an exposure that will work. Shoot in raw regardless of how many "bad" photos you toss. Then, learn your software. That, too, takes lots of practice. There's lots of software to choose from. I like Lightroom because it is very intuitive and easy to learn, and because the results are almost always satisfying. Costs +/- $150 depending on where you buy it. Nik software (plugins or stand alone) by Google is also around $150 and adds some nice editing tools and capabilities. The important thing is finding editing software that you are comfortable using. Try many. Most have free trial periods, or free software with limited capacity so that you can experiment.

A good polaririzing lens would have been a pluse to start with

You may want to do what I've done. Go into your menus and boost your in camera contrast by a couple of notches.
That's helped me.

Thank you cogerox. I don't even no what bracket means.. I am gonna read the book that I purchased for the SL1.. I do want to shot in raw, Need to figure how to do that and also start off with picasso or lightroom.. I guess I could have fixed my shots with my little I photo app, but was more interested in inproving the photo quality and you have given me great info..

I double downloaded your second shot and you certainly did focus on the eye! These are really good photos, Genessi; just need a little lightening.
