What kind of image enhancement software do you have? We need to know so we can advise how to make your images pop.
Looks as tho you could have got a good reflection with the pelican instead of the water at the top. IMHO.

Genessi, I took the first one and did a pp quickly on PS ... here is my result.... I also cropped it a bit to remove the center subject and removed a few distractions in the background.... opened shadows and did a color level adjustment.

I used the free editor, Picasa by Google. Easy to learn and great for basic edits.

Highlights, fill light, crop, museum matte frame, "boost."

Hi Caro, what I have is Adobe Photoshop Elements8 which is probably from when i first got my mac 2009 However it's to complicated for me..

First, check your metering. I'm not sure what Cannon's word for it is but you want your light meter to meter the whole area of the picture. It appears you have it set on spot metering and are setting it on something like bright like the bird. It will adjust the picture to make that spot gray, thus underexposing the picture.

You might also have choices as to how your camera treats the image. I assume you are shooting jpegs. Your camera is applying what Nikon calls a Picture Control. You can change that to be something more vivid. Check the manual.
