Ocean beach is a great place check out sunset cliffs.

Also check out the architecture across the street from the cliffs. Those old houses were built in the twenties and thirties. Some had tunnels under the cliffs so they could smuggle in libations. I know that most of the tunnels collapsed.

Also, if you get up to La Jolla, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography has an aquarium that rivals Mystic, CT.

The Balboa park downtown is wonderful, the marinas of course. The "wall" and the long lines at the border. Lots of interesting people shots at the border. (Though I would clear it with the border patrol folk first.) Also GasLamp Old Town is interesting.

Tijuana Slough wildlife refuge (No. It is still in the US, a few miles north of the border.)

Drive along hwy 94 and take the Tecate road. Even if you don't go to Tecate--though no reason not to--there are a lot of photo ops. Or over to Jacumba. Or you could take hwy 905 and cross into Mexico to go to Tecate via hwy 2D to hwy 2. That's very interesting and will give you an idea of the "maquilladoras" that NAFTA has created.

The media has latched on to the public fear and people think that Mexico is dangerous. But unless you are in the drug trade or law enforcement, it is really safer than living in Portland or Boise or Philadephia.

I love San Diego. I've considered moving there but would have to start my counseling practice all over--not a great option. San Diego is very diverse, lots of industry, recreation, Navy bases, some nice parks, great beaches. A lot of corruption in government. (They had three mayors in a row indicted one year. The fourth was a woman who tried to bring good government and some of her reforms have lasted.

Balboa Park is uptown, the GasLamp District is downtown, and Old Town is 4 or 5 miles from downtown. Three interesting sites.

The Maritime Museum. The Star of India, which is a sailing ship. There are several opportunities to take a boat tour on the bay. San Diego is a great place, and I'd live there myself if I had a chance! Someone suggested the para gliders along the Torrey Pines state beach, just a few miles north of the city. (I think that nudist beach is below the cliffs where they paraglide!) You won't run out of things to photograph, or to do or see! Others have made great suggestions. Balboa Park will have enough stuff to keep you busy for a day or so just by itself. I live about 2 hours away, and love it down there!

The above suggestions are a very good start. If you do the Embarcadero (waterfront), the Midway or the Maritime Museum and some shots of the Star of India, Old Town and Little Italy are close. Allow at least half a day in Balboa Park - the whole day if you want to do the the Zoo which is next door. If you're staying downtown some night pictures of Horton Plaza, the Santa Fe RR station, the Embarcadero and Seaport Village would be well worth considering. This is all at the west end of Broadway and close enough to revisit Little Italy again. This would also be a good choice for dinner.
Then further afield are mountain hikes, the Wild Animal Park, sunsets from Mount Helix and more. I've lived here for thirty years and if you give me more precise ideas of your likes and energy I may be able to help more. Email me if you like at robshipley@gmail.com

Thanks - actually, I will have a full weekend (at least, maybe more than one weekend) and yes, I will have a car.

Mt. Helix!!! In the 60s, I spent may a late evening parked along that wall with my GF....many NICE evenings. I lived in El Cajon then, but than had a lifestyle change and moved to OB (that was the period of 67 -59 when OB was OB!)

I don't know if the road (Severn?) is still the same to Helix...haven't ventured up there in my past three years visits there.

I think Balboa Park is way more than half a day....I can think of half a day in one or two areas, really...ditto Mission Beach, La Jolla, Old Town....and, for a nice pizza, try the Espresso cafe on Sunset Cliffs Blvd and Narragansett! A real locale fare and nice small, quaint place and great local people.

Oceanside is 38 miles north of San Diego and it has an interesting pier that would make a great sunset photo.

We visited San Diego 18 months ago and and loved the place. So much to see and do that unfortunately we didn't make it to the pier which I had noticed as we passed by on the train.

We only had two days and a local couple kindly showed us around town so we were able to fit a lot in.

Coronado Hotel,The Del, well worth a look inside this amazing hotel as well as the outside.

The Midway gave us some interesting photos of planes on the deck with the city buildings in the background.

Of course the zoo which we loved, but it's still just a zoo (if you are pushed for time). We didn't make it to the Safari Park so couldn't comment on that but I heard it is good.

There is a lot in Balboa Park but unfortunately we only drove through it enroute to the zoo.

Our friends took us to a lovely restaurant called Bali Hai on Shelter Island. Lovely food and a nice view across the Harbour back to San Diego.

Have a great trip, we found San Diego a lovely town and wished we had much more time there. Hope we get there again one day.

Safari Park is worth it if you have an extra half day:

You have some amazing photos of the animals. If we get back to San Diego we must put the Safari Park on our list.

Thanks.

I lucked out on timing. We got there within 10-15 mins of the park opening, so the male lion was still close, and I was very happy with what I captured there. (Later, we went by the den/cave again, and the lions were nowhere to be seen.)

One last comment. In a perfect world I would live in San Diego, preferably on Naragansett Street in Ocean Beach. Unfortunately, my pension, portfolio and assets could not support my basic extravagances (groceries, meds and shelter) and many of my toys are prohibited by the PDRCal. In addition to the sights, the climate is remarkably dry and does not have the extremes of Northeast Kansas.

The last time I was there I shot 12 rolls of E-4 film in basically three mornings on Shelter Island, an afternoon at the old World's Fair area at Balboa Park, a morning at Nazarene U.--I lived on campus when it was Cal Western--a day at Sunset Cliffs and a couple hours at the Cabrillo lighthouse.

After looking at all the great suggestions, then a bit of research, I think my first stop will be Balboa Park. Looking at the web page it seems there is a ton of stuff to see there (probably more than I can see in single weekend). After that, will look at some of the other suggestions and see whats doable.

Have not had much time to take pictures yet, but here's one I managed on the way from my work location back to Hotel. Sunset Cliffs Park:

Looks suspiciously familiar. If that portion of the park is behind Nazarene University, I have been there several times and is close to where I would access a small beach crawling with sea life. Thanks for the post.
