I will be in San Diego starting monday for a couple weeks (work-related). I plan to take my 7D and SX50. Any suggestions of places to go for good picture taking opportunities?
I haven't been to the zoo for quite a while, but it always used to be excellent.

Coronado Island is nice, you can take pictures of downtown SD from there. Also, the Naval base there always has interesting planes taking off and landing all the time. There is the Aircraft carrier they turned into a museum that is fun. Balboa Park has nice areas. Point Loma gives different views and not too far up is La Jolla. Very pretty. Tons of stuff to see. I miss it. Will love to see some of your shots after you get back. Cheers and have fun!
Thanks Jeff and Flathead. One thing for sure I'd like to get some good sunset pictures with something interesting in the picture (not just out over the water). Any thoughts on that?

Depends on how adventurous you are. There is always Black's Beach. A nude beach. ;-)

The Wild Animal Park is also nice. If you want to do street photography don't miss downtime/old town. Somewhere close to where the Padres play.
Hi Basil, there are tons of things to shoot in Balboa Park. Lot's of architecture, large trees, flight path to SD airport and many museums. Also Point Loma lighthouse area & Cabrillo National Monument have some really great vantage points of the entire city. USS Midway museum is super and Old Town San Diego has a nice park and old home row of homes built in the 1800's. Have fun.
Chris

The Hotel Del Coronado (he iconic white one with the orange roof) is a great foreground for sunset and an excellent place to dine afterward, although this time of year a great cocktail venue, too.
Take one or two of the ferry/boat rides for a different reverse perspective of the land attractions. The Coronado Bridge has a very long and graceful sweep. It could look like a broad pencil line across the sunset with the palm trees underneath in the mid ground. San Diego is just fantastic. Bring your resume, you will want to move there.
This time of year, they have the "Marine Layer" AKA fog in the mornings and it takes a while to "burn off." Unless it is thin and you'be got he right angle with the sunrise behind it, the morning "golden Hour" is limited. Capitalize on that with your "social time" so you're free to attack the sunset and after 'Blue hour" with a vengeance.
Have a great time.
You should contact member BrentHarder who always has wonderful pictures from San Diego and the Southern California area.
USS Midway Museum, at the foot of Broadway.

Cool. And I see if I buy tickets online I can get them for $8 (Retired Military)
Hi, you might want to take in LaJolla. There is a walking tour that takes you along the coast. Also Torrey Pines golf course very close where you can catch the para gliders.
