That is the way I am accustomed to doing it; however, as long as I can't activate "Manually" in the Sort Photos window, it's not going to work.
My puzzle is how to make "Manually" available on this computer. Thanks for trying.

How long have you had the MacBook? If you are new to it You don't do things the same way as you did on a pc. In fact it is easier on a mac than a pc in my mind. You open the album you drag the pictures to where you want them and you are done. I would suggest watching pcclassesonline.com iPhoto 2015 tutorial.

Just got off the phone with Apple.com. Wanted to move some photos around inside an album. They say you can't do that!
Anyone else tried this? Seems so elementary.
Under View, then Sort, they give the choices "by date", "by title". etc., but you cannot select "manually".
I always heard Macs are so user friendly with photos, I'm not
finding it so. Thanks

And now you find the dirty little secret about Macs - they are completely user friendly until you have to do something the way you want to do it and it conflicts with how Apple thought you should do it.

That being said, what software are you using?

If you are using lightroom, its a moot point since you can designate where files go, add keywords and change their names them on import, then you can search for them using a search tool - with any combination of date, time, lens, camera, keyword, location (if you named the folder with a location), etc.

Good point Gene, my first experience with Mac computers.
Love the screen, hate the "do it the hard way" approach to everything.

You should be able to drag and drop them. See the link below with similar issues discussed. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1537735

Glad it worked out. I went over to the Mac when I retired from business, which always used Windows. I find the Macs to be so consistent, dependable and easy to figure out and the support is all USA Based. You can sign into their support system, which is earmarked for specific parts of their system and teams come back with responses pretty quickly (free of charge). See Apple.com....Support. Also "Google" the issue, the way I did and normally reading a few of the posts will get you up and running again. A customer of mine used to call IBM Clone Windows Machines "Steam Machines". Funny! I sure love my Mac and my Time Capsule....auto backups wirelessly. They now come in 5TB sizes and will handle multiple computers.

Another view. I changed to Mac last year but not to iPhoto. The Mac is not so difficult to get your arms around. iPhoto is a different issue. I do not use it for many reasons.

Firs you have to select your pictures in the original event and creat an album. Once in the album you can sort the pictures however you want. When you first import photos into iPhoto they go into Events. In Events you can only sort by date or name. Then you can create Albums with some,or all of the pictures from one or more events. In the albums is where you can arrange your images. Albums is where you will also generate slideshows. You can remove photos from albums if you don't need them there BUT if you delet a picture from an event it will be deleted from any album that you may have put it in.
Hope this helps.

CharlieK, do you have sub folders in your album? I discovered that if I am in an albums with subfolders, I cannot move the photos unless I am in the subfolder. The problem went away when I had only one subfolder. (Of course it seems silly to have a single subfolder.)
I hope this resolves your problem.

Go to FILE > NEW ALBUM (the new album will appear in the side bar. Then give it a name).

Drag all the photos to the new album and the manual sort will become available. I hope this helps.

That answered my flow up question. Will deleting from Event also delete the
Photo in the album? You answered that, thanks
