I wonder if any fellow joggers have any experience with silk brand tripods. Any input is appreciated! Thank you

Like tulips,

I purchased a Slik U-112 tripod in 1984 for my Oly OM-4T camera, and still use it with my Canon 1000D DSLR and lenses.

It is light weight to carry around, has rectangular adjustable legs, compression lever clamps to lock leg extension, retractable bottom points for rocky areas, and rubber pads to protect wooden floors.

The bottom of the center post has a 1/4-20 threaded stud for attaching the camera upside-down for close macro work, and the quick release camera stud is very handy for quick set-up.

If the light weight construction may be a concern the bottom stud can be used to install a 1/4-20 adapter/hook to hang a 5 lbs weight.

I still use mine and would purchase another one if the need arises.

Entry level stuff. If you are serious about photography, you'll buy a better tripod. If you are and occasional photographer, go for it.

I'm one of those that learn slowly, so I have a few tripods in my bag. Some I bought when I was in my teens and some I bought for pro use. The "junk" which has not been given away, works well for off camera flash, but not for a camera/lens. There are times that I do push a tripod a little beyond what it is capable of, with care, and there are times I bring out the gargantuan big gun, however I do not like carrying that very far! What some have said is that if you under buy, you may just end up having wasted that money and end up buying a better one anyway. I enjoy taking night shots and for that I need a rig that's not going to sway in a little wind or my shot will be junk. Being a sports guy, I use a monopod way more than a tripod, but I have at least four of those as well. Sometimes bigger IS better, and sometimes you can make lighter work! Just my $ .02. Please don't waste your money on total junk!

Can't recommend Slik for serious work unless your gear is VERY small and very light.

Not a jogger. However, take a look at Dolica. They make tripods at various weights and levels, including carbon fibre (or is it fiber?). Check out their website. I've had two of them and the build was good. (My daughter demanded the first one as a gift. She does that sometimes.) I don't use it often enough to attest to its longevity though. It does get good reviews.

Just like a few others here, I own a SLIK U212 and I consider it to be a very decent tripod, especially since I bought it used for the paltry price of $15. Go to B&H and read all the favorable reviews for the U212.

I have one and love it. they make a wide range. I went to a real camera store and picked out one that supported my heaviest outfit.

"Silk" or "Slik"?

I used to wear silk shorts while jogging, does that count?

Not much support, but you probably didn't chafe.

Buy the best you can afford, 'for your needs'. I've got a Slik, has done well for me, but I'm not a 'pro' photographer. I have a much heavier one, I have my telescope mounted on. It's a brute.

Yeah, my good friend uses a heavy wooden surveyors tripod for his telescope. I actually fabricated a small but heavy duty steel pier mount type of tripod for my small telescope.

I've been using a Slik U212 since the 70's and it is strong and versatile. I have a platform that mounts on it to hold my slide projector and it works quite well.

I have been using a Slik U212 Deluxe for about 25 years and really like it. Well built, very versitile ....can mount the camera on the bottom of the center post or one of the legs for tough to get at macro shots, built in spirit level, angle settings for panoramas and the quick release post system.

I too have a Slik U212 Deluxe (Black Diamond) bought in the mid eighties along with a couple of Canon T90's. It has given excellent service over the years. The head was the weakest part but it was smooth and stable. I replaced the head earlier in the year (after 28 years use) with a Slik SBH-550 ball head and it has given it a new lease of life.
Slik make a range of tripods ranging from cheap and flimsy to excellent, pretty much like the majority of tripod manufactures.
Some posters seem to think you need a tripod which has to be able to support in excess of 15 pounds, you know what you need and the total weight of camera, lens and flash that you are likely to use both now and realistically in the future.
An expensive, heavy duty tripod can be useless if it is too heavy to carry on field trips and a cheap lightweight tripod can be worth it's weight in gold if it's the one you have with you to take that once in a lifetime shot.
I have no problem with recommending Slik choose wisely and it can give you many years of use as most Slik users will testify.

I also had a similar set up and used it to good effect as I gave slide shows regarding missionary work in churches a number of years ago, I did find it needed a brace to prevent vibration when changing slides but it was a cost effective option back then.

I used a Slik 700 for several years and it is a very stable tripod with a capacity of somewhere around 18 lbs. It is a very good tripod and the only reason I changed is weight. As I aged, I found that it was better to have carbon fiber equipment to carry around.

Had a Slik Gazelle Tripod for thirty five years. Quite light
But held Nikon Fs and Canons when I went abroad so I can reccomend providing you pick the right tripod for the weight it is expected to carry
