It is sad, but I've had some bad luck there a couple times recently. Something seems to have changed.

I'll be going to the Oregon coast in the Newport area for a few days later this month, and I will have several days to travel locally and take photos. I'd really apprectiate hearing about your favorite sites/locations especially for sunset/sunrise landscapes (but certainly not restricted to that). Thanks!

It can be wet and nasty and I found it to be tough to find a good spot to shoot from. The further north the more congested to shoreline becomes with houses blocking the beach.

Be prepared for wet and windy weather, both for your camera equipment and yourself. It can be very cold! If you're properly prepared, there will be ample opportunities for images in every direction. For me the best location for photography on the Oregon coast is Cannon Beach, but that is 2-1/2 hours north of Newport.

Consider buying two books(Amazon) ....
The photographers guide to the Oregon Coast by David Middleton and Rod Barbee

Northwest Milepost .... excellent book that covers Idaho, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia ... it tells you by highway mile post by milepost ... what is there ...covers many roadways .... I used the book when I traveled Oregon and Washington ..... I also used a Milepost publication for Alaska ...

Been to the Oregon coast a couple times past few years (family in Portland). Have been from "Yachats" (south of Newport) north to "Seaside" along hwy 101. Not sure what type of photos you would like but all photo opps never seem to stop. Sea coast, Lighthouses, towns, etc.
Enjoy. I know I did. I was born and raised in Florida (flat) so what a treat that has been. What a beautiful state.
Have fun.

Mo's is over rated. While their clam chowder is OK most of the rest of the menu is terrible. I was just at Mo's two months ago and was very disappointed and so were the rest of the people in my party.

Ditto on Depoe Bay. I used to go there quite a bit and stay in a condo right off the north side of the "bay" (it's a pretty small bay). Did a lot of whale watching there although this is the wrong time of year for that. Great place to watch storms come in.

Bandon Beach is about 2 ½ hours south. Great sea stacks. The drive will take you past the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (just south of Florence) which offers some interesting and large dunes overlooking the coast. A bit further is Coos Bay, where you can find some nice harbor shots. If you go north about 3 hours you can get to Cannon Beach, another well known site with great sea stacks and rugged surf.

I can see I'm going to need to check the tides for the best photo opportunities. Hopefully they will coincide with sunrise/sunset while I'm there. Thanks Jim.

While in Newport it is not a bad idea to stop in at the Original Mo's for a bowl of chowder.

I agree.

Personally, I think it's over-salted--and frankly no better than canned (Snow's comes to mind).

But that's just my opinion. Some like it; I don't.

As far as beach spots, I would hit the Central coast and not miss Yachats. The Driftwood Inn has very good food, craft beers and usually live music. For coffee, the best can be had at the Green Tortoise. If you want to treat yourself to a nice spa experience, the Overleaf Lodge has a hot tub with a window view of the crashing surf.

I've probably been to Yachats 40 times-- it's worth the extra drive (from Portland) in my opinion.

The Dunes at Florence are also worth a few gigabytes on your memory card.

Sunsets can be beautiful-- but that's just a chance meeting--it could be rainy, foggy, or clear as a bell.

Yachats was on my list of possibilities. I'm moving it up the list. Thanks LRF.
