I'll be going to the Oregon coast in the Newport area for a few days later this month, and I will have several days to travel locally and take photos. I'd really apprectiate hearing about your favorite sites/locations especially for sunset/sunrise landscapes (but certainly not restricted to that). Thanks!

All the nearby lighthouses, the bridge at Newport Bay.

Thanks, Allen. I've enjoyed looking at your photos, and will definitely check out those spots.

I have an RV lot near the Yaquina Head lighthouse. There is no end in opportunities for picture taking.

Hope for sunshine. But prepare both you and your camera for wind and rain.

As always early and late in the day is best.

I have only been ones to the Oregon coast and can't wait to go back. One spot I really enjoyed was Devils Punch Bowl State Park.
(very small)
It is only a 5 minute drive north of Newport.
Can't help to post a shot of the place if you don't mind

Don't mind at all, Clemens, and I appreciate the suggestion. Thanks.

Thanks, bsprague. Yes, I'm bringing all the rain gear that I own!

Cannon Beach is a helluva long way from Newport, though. Bandon would be much closer, and has even more haystack rocks than Cannon Beach.

Bandon Beach is about 2 ½ hours south. Great sea stacks. The drive will take you past the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (just south of Florence) which offers some interesting and large dunes overlooking the coast. A bit further is Coos Bay, where you can find some nice harbor shots. If you go north about 3 hours you can get to Cannon Beach, another well known site with great sea stacks and rugged surf.

I lived In Newport for 10 years, all places mentioned above are good, the bay front is the last working commercial working bay front {in Oregon}, lots of photo ops!!
drive up the river road, follow the bay front road past the Embarcadero restaurant , about 3 to 5 miles there is an oyster farm, grab a bag of oysters to BBQ!!!

While in Newport it is not a bad idea to stop in at the Original Mo's for a bowl of chowder.

I'd try Local Ocean Seafoods, right on the harbor - ate there twice, both northbound & southbound, when I was on the OR coast this summer. Terrific seafood. Popular spot.

It is sad, but I've had some bad luck there a couple times recently. Something seems to have changed.

I agree.

Personally, I think it's over-salted--and frankly no better than canned (Snow's comes to mind).

But that's just my opinion. Some like it; I don't.

As far as beach spots, I would hit the Central coast and not miss Yachats. The Driftwood Inn has very good food, craft beers and usually live music. For coffee, the best can be had at the Green Tortoise. If you want to treat yourself to a nice spa experience, the Overleaf Lodge has a hot tub with a window view of the crashing surf.

I've probably been to Yachats 40 times-- it's worth the extra drive (from Portland) in my opinion.

The Dunes at Florence are also worth a few gigabytes on your memory card.

Sunsets can be beautiful-- but that's just a chance meeting--it could be rainy, foggy, or clear as a bell.
