Super shots. No, really ... Super! I send you thanks for sharing these.
Thank you very much for the compliment. I think I am starting to make some progress.

Focus looks good and images are sharp. Looks like the diffuser face needs to be closer to the end of the lens as the eyes are a bit dark. Do you have a picture of your rig?

I was shooting with the 580 for the first time mounted on top of the body and the box was just short of the front of the lens. My mistake was pulling out the white shade that screens the upwards portion of the flash. It was the saw setup I posted for the Chevy metal stack I did but with the 580 EX II vs the 340 EX II.

That explains it, you will get better illumination by taking the flash/diffuser off the hotshoe and getting it closer to the end of the lens.

I have a bracket that would do that but I was racing the sunset to get the shot.

Understood, bracket is a good option and for field macro should become part of your standard gear,

My plan is to use the bracket for the 340 remoted with the 580 so that I get two angles of illumination. That will take some tweaking to balance out but should give me some nice results.

I thought about doing something similar but, what a beast for handheld field macro

That metallic gold trim around the eyes is very cool, flies usually ugly.. Not this one!

Box on the top mount likely the 6x8 and bare 340 on the bracket from the side at some lesser power with the built in diffuser might not be too bad.

When I saw the gold in my first shot I didn't want to lose him. If I had gone in for my bracket I think he would have been history. Thank you.

This is what I have in mind. It balances pretty well. I just need to read the manuals and get it all setup to do what I want.
I also have a white end cover diffuser that might work well on the 380.
