It comes back to my earlier post. Unless you have a newer model of Mac stuff, the upgrades may not be 100% compatible. I have a 6 year old MacBook Pro that will never get an upgrade. A lot of folks don't bother to get the latest versions of software upgrades like Lightroom, PS, Office, Java. You have to know that when Apple writes new OS code like Yosemite, it is developed in conjunction with the latest software versions and not stuff greater than 2 years old. You can't write code that is compatible with everything; otherwise your upgrades would always be running slower and more cumbersome---think Microsoft. That's why you must upgrade any program you are using, whether it be LR or Java for instance

Great response and on-the-mark.

I was wondering if I should update my mac laptop and desktop computers to the new "yosemite" upgrade. I read that it might mess up the mail with certain types of email addresses, but most importantly I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Elements 8. I also read it may not read some software...has anyone out there upgraded to "yosemite" and does your software still work ok for all your photography needs? I would hate to have that not work...I can't afford any new photo software....let me know if you have had any experience with this new mac computer upgrade...and if it effects any existing stuff on your computer...

You didn't mention what model units you have and the current operating systems. If you are running snow leopard or earlier on any of them and you have any "power pc" programs on them, those won't run on Lion and above. An example is PS CS2 and lots of printer and scanner software. Fortunately, most of the printer and scanner software have non "power pc" current versions that will run. If you want to figure out if you have any of these "power pc" programs, you can click on the "About this MAC" on the main Apple Menu (the Apple in the far upper left) and select "More Info". Select "Applications" under "Software" category and look at the "Kind" column. Anything there with "Power PC" won't run under Lion and higher.

Some other programs won't run or will have issues from my understanding even if they are not Power PC, such as Aperture 2.

Roaring Apps is a good website to kind of figure out what will and won't run under a particular OS. If you check it out for your core applications beforehand you maybe won't get caught in a jam.

For older machines one thing you can do is to upgrade the memory. For instance, a Late 2008 MBP has a 4gb max but that's Apple's supported size. That machine will take 8gb. For maybe $40 you can get the extra memory and the machine will run much better (depending on what you use it for). That may be why some people experience really slow machines when upgrading to the new operating systems. My 4gb MBP has run perfectly with 8gb now for almost 3 years.

I tried your steps, but it didn't come up with the software and applications...like you stated...my computer is a 2009.....so I am not sure if I should upgrade yet or not...from the previews under the upgrade site most people found out that it sucked...I am so confused...some people say its great...I am afraid to do it as if things get messed up I would have to go into town (we live in a rural area so its quite a drive), would have to make an appointment first and then pay to have some service done... :( why can't they make these upgrades work on everything? Its kind of disappointing...I was excited to upgrade...anyway can't find anything that has the points you mention .....

I upgraded a while ago. I've found no issues at all. However, I use my mac for photo/graphics work and also use the browser for photo related sites. That's it.

What OS are you running? Is it snow leopard? You probably bought it with that OS. How much memory do you have?

I have updated both new and middle aged desktop and laptops with only one hassle - X-Rite requires a (free) software patch to handle monitor calibration on Yosemite. It was quick and easy, while the Yosemite was time consuming, depending mostly on the speed of your ISP.

The update went slow but came out fine. All photo applications worked fine, had to install free updates for Printshop, Wacom tablet, Spyder3 calibration, a few others. One upgrade was a 2012 Mac mini, the other a 2009 MacBook.

Hmmm, I'm now realizing that you might be just "replying" to the various posts ... if you "quote reply" that will give us which post you are replying to.

Anyway, if you are on Mavericks, that means you've already passed the hurdle regarding "power pc" programs and probably a lot of other issues. I can't see a move to Yosemite creating a completely trashed system. If you pull the trigger on the upgrade, let us know the result. You will undoubtedly have to update some of your drivers, etc.

I do know that Sony doesn't yet have full support for 10.10. Their raw converter and some Play Memories apps only work up to Mavericks..
