I was wondering if I should update my mac laptop and desktop computers to the new "yosemite" upgrade. I read that it might mess up the mail with certain types of email addresses, but most importantly I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Elements 8. I also read it may not read some software...has anyone out there upgraded to "yosemite" and does your software still work ok for all your photography needs? I would hate to have that not work...I can't afford any new photo software....let me know if you have had any experience with this new mac computer upgrade...and if it effects any existing stuff on your computer...

Hi Jan,
Everything has worked just fine for me. I just bought my new Mac and had everything migrated over from the old Maverick. I had LR & PS CC, both seem to work fine as well as all my old browsers and mail addys. Go for it, Yosemite has some real cool features.

I upgraded a MacBook to Mavericks and it slowed it down to a snails pace so I left my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion. When Yosemite came out I thought I had nothing to lose so I upgraded the MacBook and everything now works amazingly fast. I have since upgraded my MacBook Pro also and am very pleased with the results. I'm quite sure you will be pleased with it also.

I updated from 10.8 up to Yosemite 10.10 (skipping over Mavericks 10.9) and have had no real problems to speak of. Mail has worked fine; no problems with PS C6 or PS CC, Nik or Topaz plugins, etc.. The one difficulty I did run into was needing to install a new driver for my Canon iPF6400, which was a small hassle because I was unaware at first that to install the new driver you MUST uninstall the old printer driver first. Other than that, no problems.

I updated my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago. I have not had any problem and it appears to run faster than with Maverick.

If you do go with Yosemite, take a look at this link. There's a paint program in there.

I updated my iMac and MacBook Air both to Yosemite with no problems. At first it was slow making online connections, but it no longer has that problem. I don't use the photo programs you mentioned so I can't help you out there.

One word of caution about Yosemite...if you're a Canon shooter who relies upon the Canon utilities (Digital Photo Professional; EOS Utility or Camera Window) those apps are not compatible with Yosemite. I don't know when Canon is going to release new versions for MacOS.

Apparently there is an issue with JAVA in Yosemite... Some apps require JAVA6, others the newest one. Apparently, and I do not pretend to understand this, several JAVA versions can be installed at once. So this note is not how to fix it, but where you might begin if an issue should come up.

JAVA will be a new control panel item from now on - but may not ship with the Yosemite update. You can download it all for free. So if you have issues with some LightRooms, or DreamWeaver..or just parts of some programs, this is a good place to start, and from what I have read- fixes all the problems.

I up graded to Yosemite and Wow, what a difference it made on my iMac and MacBook Air. The Internet connections are faster and the overall processing speed is faster. I really like the new Safari interface. I use several apps that are Java based and have had no problems running them, so I don't know what the other users' problems are with Java---probably unrelated to Yosemite. Go for the upgrades always. You won't regret it. BUT, AND THIS IS A BIG BUT, make certain that your computers are newer than mid-2012 models. Otherwise some of the Yosemite features might not be available. Don't upgrade a 4 year old machine.

Someone may have already put in enough info on this that my input will be irrelevant....BUT! here it is anyway. I was running Snow Leopard on my "Pro" and tried Maverick which immediately caused an uproar in many of my key programs, couldn't run Word, Photoshop was "out of date" etc (I have PS 4 which does what I need it to do) so I had to re-load Snow Leopard and all the programs that wouldn't run on Mav. Up-grading is only important if it's important to the user. If everything runs then there is really no "need", unless you are one who wants a faster "Adobe Flash" or whatever. It's down to the old rule, If it ain't broke don't fix it. etc. (Not a "humble" opinion, just an "opinion".
