Buy the best quality of lens that you can afford--the camera model in many ways not the issue.

It is the quality of the glass in the lens that adds to the end photo result. If you know how to read a test strip check out a good photography magazine that has lens testing and you will be able to decide which lens that you want to do with

hope that helps

Hi Gang,
It's that time of the year & I get to pick out my gift from the hubs. I am wanting to expand my arsenal with a "telephoto" & as usual can't make up my mind!! I have about 2500.00 to get to spend.

I will be shooting with & adding to:
Canon 6D - Lenses:
Canon 60D - Ef 75-300 1:4-5.6 III EF 50 1.8
Canon EXTI - EFS 18-55
40mm - EF 24-105 mm 1.4 L IS
EF 85mm
FS 18-135 mm
Canon 540 Ex II Flash
so any recommendations would be very helpful !! I shoot 95 % of time with the 6D (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE ) And I shoot a variety of Weddings Portraits & some Indoor Studio (newborns) & for personal pleasure wildlife & grandchildrens sporting events . Thanks so much for your help & advice !!! Love to all Jazzy !

I think you would love the 70-200 2.8 I have the nikon version and use it mostly for portraits and weddings and its a fantastic lens. I tried someone elses 75-300 and it felt cheap and nothing compared to the 2.8 lens.

Have the 70-200mm f2.8 and love it. Best quality lens I have. If you will be shooting in low light I recommend it. If light is not a problem go to a cheaper non-constant aperture.

The Tamron 150-600 F5-6.3 with vibration reduction is a super lens. Although it is heavy (4.1 lbs), I find I can shoot without a tripod and get good photos. It's made with Canon mount. You won't go wrong unless it's simply physically too big a beast.

I agree with one of the new 150-600 tele lenses, either Tamron or Sigma, since you already have up to 300mm covered. I have the Tamron for Nikon and find it to be a great lens for birds and other wildlife when I can't get closer.

My son-in-law used his 70-200 f2.8 75% of the time when he did weddings so that would be a good option if you need or want a better lens for weddings.

Most telescopes are mirror lenses. It allows one to fold the length of the lens to make it much shorter but with a bigger diameter. Tends to make point sources of light "Donut Shapes."

Looks like you have a lot covered already. Why don't you think about what you've wished you'd had in a particular shooting situation and go for that. It might not even be a lens. If you do actually believe all that money should be spent on a new lens. I would go for an L-lens in your favourite focal length.

I have a 70-200 f2.8 and a Sigma 150-500 zoom. The 70-200 is both lighter and more responsive. It's much better in low light. Plenty big enough for virtually any indoor sport and useful outdoors if you shoot near the corners in soccer, and football, or near home plate, first or third in baseball. The only reason to go with the larger lens is if you need the bigger reach and others have already pointed out that you can get almost the same reach with a converter. Also the 70-299 is great for some kinds of portraiture. You would love it.

The 70-200mm f/2.8L II aso gets my vote. There's a reason you see so many pros with this lens. (Not just with Canon but also the Nikon equivalent.)

I have had close to 30 lenses including beauties like 85 f1.2L, 135 f2.0 by both Canon and Zeiss and the 500mm f/4L II ... And if I had to choose only one lens to keep, it would be my 70-200 mm f2.8L II. (Of course that's my preferred focal length on full frame - over wide angle.)

Jazzy, you might also look at the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. Get the lens from B&H They'll discount from Sigmas List price which is around 4K. Put a 1.4 extender on it and you can get pretty good wild life shots. DON"T use a 2X besides stopping down to f5.6 it dramatically dulls your image. I used it (2X) baddddd tool. The sigma will take you over the 2500, but I don't 'know by how much. It's a relatively heavy lens. Good luck, Robin

You don't have a 100-400L listed.I do not know the price of the new one, but the old one is about $1500 and is a very good lens for wildlife.

Jazzy, don't know what outdoor sports you mean or how big the playing field is.
The new 100-400 should be really nice for outdoors, but it's its no good for anything indoors.
The 70-200 could be used for weddings also or light indoor sports, but outdoors gets short pretty fast.
If you ever plan to do any nature, it's too short.
The 70-200 will take either extenter and should work well for a little extra reach. The 100-400 gets a little longer with a 1.4 but you need to tape the pins to keep AF. Some have reported that it keeps AF on their 6D's but it's not supposed to according to Canon.
If you can use it for weddings, the 70-200 might be more useful. If you don't use it for weddings, then get the longer 100-400.
My 70-200 is my least used lens since I use faster primes for my indoor work. My 100-400 is one of my most used lenses since I do nature. Good luck. ;-)

Several months ago, I had purchased from Canon a refurbished Canon 400L f5.6 for around $1,100 and it would be a great lens for your grandchildren's sporting events if you push the ISO up to somewhere around 1600. It is a very sharp lens and Canon only sells them when looking brand spanking new ! If you will do some research on this lens, you will find that everyone claims it to be extra super sharp and if you go to a Flickr website, you can see images or photos this lens has made ! Needle sharp with excellent colors and contrast !!

My 100-400 worked perfectly on autofocus with a non Canon X2 extender but would not work with the Canon version. (camera 5D Mk11)
