They did that before but then screwed everything by electing Pocahontas's distant relative to the US senate. Go figure. :-D

The previous 'Republicans' were on the left side conservatism.
CT liberals own the polls and make them come out as they choose. Even though there was a 70% outcry to get rid of the incumbents, they all survived somehow.

I have to take issue with #2, Louisiana.

2. Louisiana

Louisiana has one of the smallest senior populations in the country due to a variety of issues. Crime is a big problem in Louisiana, and the life expectancy at age 65 is relatively low. The state's climate helps save it from being the worst spot in the country for retirement.

Have your retirement check sent to your bank, kick back and enjoy. Fishing, Hunting, Boating, a true sportsman's paradise. As for crime - stay out of New Orleans. As for that life expectancy at age 65 - really? We seem to have a lot of dead old people still walking around.

Re: Tennessee:

Not everyone lives in Memphis or Knoxville, both of which have high crime rates. Those who retire to the state usually pick a medium sized town/county in which to live, most of which have low crime rates.

I read the obits daily for my county and the neighboring one where we used to live, and at least half the deaths are those over 80.

Property taxes in most counties are insanely low. We live on just under two acres, have a four year old home. Our taxes are under $800 yearly. We have a $40 wheel tax for each of our cars. We have a sales tax of just over 8% on the dollar, and it includes everything, from food to clothing. It is the only state tax we have.

We are fortunate to have a great sheriff who does his job and does it well. We have an automated warning system that calls the land line phone if there is something going down in the vicinity. I mean, what can go wrong if your sheriff's name is Oudi (Odie) Shoupe? Heck, it's almost like living in Mayberry!!

Seriously, the USA Today article let Memphis and Knoxville determine their assessment, but it's really not that way in 90% of the state. The state is poor, to be sure, and being poor leads to early death, drugs, and crime. It can't be otherwise, and actually has never been otherwise.

So come on down! But not too many of you!

;-)

LOL Everyone knows that it is a personal issue as to retirement. There have been many of these sorts of articles and all of them are different with there criteria. this article is just as misleading as all the rest. There are the ones for tax reasons, quality of life, health, expenses, etc, etc, To each his own. Each has its own value but you must make up your own mind.

And that is the truth.  :-D

I'd never leave NYS. Maybe a few weeks in the Andes during the summer to get away from the heat and humidity, but NY has gorgeous seasons, my state retirement benefits don't get taxed by NY, and, most of all...I don't mind paying taxes because I feel they are a sort of charitable giving (because NYS gives more to the fed govt. than it gets in return, NYS is actually subsidizing those states who take more from the fed govt. than they give).

I live in a rural area where I've learned to drink beer with a bunch of Irish poets; I'm 15 minutes away from great hospitals; I've got one of the greatest photo clubs with women who make me laugh and support one another in every aspect of life; I have a Jewish community which enriches my life; and I live not too far from big cities, like NY, Boston, and Philly.

In the summer, Saratoga and western MA come alive with culture. In Albany we have a grammy-awarded symphony. We have some very good restaurants. Life is affordable.

Through the internet, I am in contact with friends all over the world, including, I hope, Hoggers.

And, as with anywhere in the world, it's the people who become like family that makes life worth living.

  The electorate only have themselves to blame but they will never acknowledge that. :(
