One of the reasons we opted to retire in Ohio is most retirement income isn't subject to state income tax. The main reason being our daughter & her family are here.

I have to take issue with #2, Louisiana.

Louisiana has one of the smallest senior populations in the country due to a variety of issues. Crime is a big problem in Louisiana, and the life expectancy at age 65 is relatively low. The state's climate helps save it from being the worst spot in the country for retirement.

Have your retirement check sent to your bank, kick back and enjoy. Fishing, Hunting, Boating, a true sportsman's paradise. As for crime - stay out of New Orleans. As for that life expectancy at age 65 - really? We seem to have a lot of dead old people still walking around.

LOL Everyone knows that it is a personal issue as to retirement. There have been many of these sorts of articles and all of them are different with there criteria. this article is just as misleading as all the rest. There are the ones for tax reasons, quality of life, health, expenses, etc, etc, To each his own. Each has its own value but you must make up your own mind.

I'd never leave NYS. Maybe a few weeks in the Andes during the summer to get away from the heat and humidity, but NY has gorgeous seasons, my state retirement benefits don't get taxed by NY, and, most of all...I don't mind paying taxes because I feel they are a sort of charitable giving (because NYS gives more to the fed govt. than it gets in return, NYS is actually subsidizing those states who take more from the fed govt. than they give).

I live in a rural area where I've learned to drink beer with a bunch of Irish poets; I'm 15 minutes away from great hospitals; I've got one of the greatest photo clubs with women who make me laugh and support one another in every aspect of life; I have a Jewish community which enriches my life; and I live not too far from big cities, like NY, Boston, and Philly.

In the summer, Saratoga and western MA come alive with culture. In Albany we have a grammy-awarded symphony. We have some very good restaurants. Life is affordable.

Through the internet, I am in contact with friends all over the world, including, I hope, Hoggers.

And, as with anywhere in the world, it's the people who become like family that makes life worth living.
