Geez....are you bragging or complaining???? What the hell do you drive that you spent $245 to fill up. A "tank" no less????

I think he meant to say $2.45 per gallon cost....That is about what CostCo is selling gas for here in the St Louis Area.

Just as I finished fill filling up yesterday after work, the station manager came out with placards change the price. I commented to her about dropping the price now that I had filled up. She said "Be Happy. It's going UP from $2.71 a gallon to $2.99. Talk about a close call.

Some gas stations post the cash price of gas. Others post the one price they pay, regardless of payment method. We have Quick Chek here, and they have their own payment card. That's the lowest price listed. Cash is higher, and CC is higher still. Our county politicians are trying to pass a law that would require more accurate listings.

I got gas yesterday at a local place - $3.25 became $3.32 when I inserted the CC. Since I save 5% using the CC, I still came out ahead. It is annoying, though. I usually buy my gas at Citgo. It's the cheapest around, and they have one price for all payment type.

Citgo in my area recently went the opposite way. Separate prices for cash and credit.

Who makes cars that require premium?
Or do you have a classic with high compression ratio ?
If you can afford a high priced car that only drinks the high priced stuff, why would you even look or discuss the price of gas that the average mortal uses?

I have a mid-90's Cadillac Deville with cast iron engine before the Northstar. But I also had a later Northstar Eldorado up north and it required premium as well. And don't fool yourself, there are a number of brand new cars out there that require premium. Even some small cars, not just sports cars. You have to watch that factor when buying new. That was discussed on UHH about 6 weeks ago.

Some automotive engine designs for premium gasoline actually cost less to run than a comparable engine on regular.
The engine has to be specifically for premium gas and forbids the use of regular gas (it burns hotter).
Using premium gas in an engine designed for regular offers no benefit and is a waste of money. In fact, it might not run as well on premium because of the engine;s lower compression ratio.

My car is designed for premium. I wouldn't be so totally stupid as to spend an addition 40 cents per gallon for premium if I didn't have to. I've tried mid-grade in it during a long trip and not only does it ping on an uphill climb in the Smokies when I drive up north, but the mpg is harmed by a couple miles per gallon until I go back to premium.

Everything you said is true, but I take exception with the last line about putting premium in a regular engine could cause the engine to not run as well. I have always had motorcycles since I was 16, dozens of them over the years, and have never experienced any detrimental effects to performance as I ran premium in all of them although the operation manuals said they were designed for 85 to 87 octane. In one or two bikes I felt like the premium may have improved performance a little but typically I just did it so the bike had excess octane to work with and a premium quality fuel with good additives from a major brand station, etc.

I've currently got two Triumphs...A Bonneville T-100 which is 865cc Twin and a Rocket III which is a 2,300CC Three Cylinder.....It requires Premium and from time to time I fill it with 89 Octane Regular....I do not notice any less performance with regular fuel. My Mustang GT only requires 87 to 89 octane regular.

Wow,, you guys on the east coast, are getting off good ! California,,, averages about $3.25. If we pay cash, at most stations, it's cheaper. we pay a premium for using credit cards, but not debit cards. it hurts, either way.
