I think you will get some beautiful images with the longer focal length of your 24-70 lens, say from 50mm to 70mm. My favorite portrait focal lengths on full frame are from 85 to 135. On your 7D, 50mm to 70mm would be similar to 80mm to 112mm, right in that range.

24-70 is fine. Babies don't have the "personal space" issues that adults have. I would keep it closer to the 70mm end to keep away from distortion. Don't want the "big nose dog" effect. (Like on my daughter's old school notebooks that she HAD to have when she was a kid)
