Thanks again. I did find a jungle gym in the play yard so used that. I will post a picture ASAP. I will title it school yard pix.

Tita, there's only one other thing you need. Call the local school district office and get ahold of the one substiture who is gently, kind and loving - and can melt a granite monoloth with "The Look!" Every school district has at least one. Have this person there as a "kid wrangler" who will control the behavior of the children while you do what you do so well.

Oh, and I like the idea of a high (10-12 foot) ladder; just make sure it's rock solid. If necessary, have your wrangler weld the joints with her stare.

From a previous suggestion, I googled "track team photos", looked at a bunch and found them all boring. I thought you had taken on the impossible. But, you did it. Of the 100 or so I looked at this morning, none have the interesting composition of yours. Well done!

Get a ladder and have the kiddies get in front of it and look up. When you shoot downward, about all you get is faces so that in the yearbook they show up bigger and better. If you have a school mascot, have it in the center.

Everyone warms up and stretches. Consider shooting from the stadium seats down at the team as they're stretching... probably on their backs so all faces are visible. Might be fun and lead to other ideas.

Especially if you have a monopod and have a chance to practice, using a slightly slower shutter speed and panning with the runner can produce a great photo.

Don't try to do too much. Decide what you think you can accomplish and concentrate on that.

Remember to take pictures of the fans, or the celebrations after a race.

ooo thank you for the reminder about taking pictures of the fans. Good idea thank you.

Make up a COLLAGE or take shot of each subject with green screen then make up your collage. The ones below may help.
I went to google track and field collage and a lot on it to help. Have fun with it.

10 x 13
10 x 13...

So I subscribe to PPA mag. about two years ago this guy went to their convention and was tasked with photographing the board members. There was about 20+ of them. He went to the auditorium put his camera on a tripod and snapped the place. Then he took the members one by one and sat them in a different seat and photographed them using a flash held by an assistant with a snoot. He then combined all the single shots in Photoshop onto the original of the entire empty place masking out what he did not want The picture was quite impressive. Trying to find it.

Good challenge. I had a little success with shooting a high school team on the track with some hurdles thrown in. Your different size tracksters will help get a closer shot. I think the best shot is always the closest shot so all faces are easily recognizable that will fit in an 8x10 frame or 16x20 poster where most team pictures end up. Good luck

You might Google for some "soccer team pictures" to get some ideas. I think the most important thing you can do when getting team pictures is to get as close as possible so faces are easily recognizable and keep in mind most pictures will be printed on a 4x6, 8x10, or 16x20 format. Having different size subjects will help. I didn't follow my own advise on this pic.

"Everyone gathers around" is safe...and reliable.

It may be boring...but it's boring for a reason...it works.

If you don't know why certain poses work on an individual basis or in a group...then breaking new creative ground (in my opinion) is not wise.

If I had a job to photograph a track team, I'd go with safe, and time-proven over "let's see if this works!"

Excellent idea, but after you are comfortable that you captured the standard, go ahead and experiment.
Yours may be the "new standard".
There is always somebody that did it first!

With a large group photo, as in 30-40, everyone's FACE is super-important. The first thing every team member will check for is themselves. See if you can take a pic from around a statue or team mascot, from an elevated position, shooting slightly downward, with everyone looking up at you. It should provide good results. :-D

Having shot hundreds of team photo's I can tell you it's virtually impossible not to do boring! So your use of the Jungle Gym is inspired - nice work! But now I'll tell you how I believe it could have been stronger. By getting up higher (a ladder provided by the school's maintenance staff) you can a) reduce the problem of the faces towards the back being hidden by those in front, and b) if it's high enough, put all the faces more nearly into the same plane, reducing the apparent size difference.

But, like I said, Nice Job!
