Depending on the time allowed factor, you should take the tried and true shots first as a safety net. Then start trying the composed setups you have thought up and see if they work out.

Using he track oval as the setup is a no brainer... maybe split up the group. Some running and the others inside the oval cheering them on. Maybe on the track above them and they running towards your position... lots of angles and setups you could imagine for after the standard group shots.

Should be fun and exciting to do... are you planning on using lighting? if there is a lot of sun, the shadows and dynamic range of sun vs shadow could be a problem.

Please I need ideas. I need to do a school track team photo. I need a cool idea not the same "Everyone gathers around " Something fun something different. Any ideas?

Thanks

Taking a picture of 40 Young people at the same time Is a big Challenge just in itself. I would keep it traditional. Group them on a bleachers with rows of smiling faces. Good luck with the lighting (bright overcast would be great) so.. early morning. Avoid that noon time sun (harsh shadows and bad color temperature). Use a tripod take several shots (getting them all to look in the same direction at the same time) lol. Use a small aperture you don't want a shallow depth of field for this. After you get this part done get them out on the field doing there thing. Take shots of everything they are doing as individuals and small groups. Then pack selected shots around the group shot in a collage. When you are done... Go down to your favorite gin mill.. ORDER A DOUBLE Martini vary dry.. Drink up and think about if you want to ever do this again :)

If you can get above them, what if they make rings by age and then look up at you? Or interlock the rings so it is like the Olympics?

"Everyone gathers around" is safe...and reliable.

It may be boring...but it's boring for a reason...it works.

If you don't know why certain poses work on an individual basis or in a group...then breaking new creative ground (in my opinion) is not wise.

If I had a job to photograph a track team, I'd go with safe, and time-proven over "let's see if this works!"

I agree - the most important considerations are you can see everyone's face, the light is good and even for everyone, and the heads are close to the same size. (No getting closer to some people with a wide lens, while others are smaller in the background.) A high vantage point is always good, so you aren't looking up at people.

I think you're beyond luck. As frankie c suggested, I wish you a good bottle of wine when you get home. ;-)

Looks really good. More importantly, I'm sure the kids and their parents will think so. :-)

Protestant or Catholic. The only difference is WHAT you choose to drink, both before and after the shoot!

Especially if you have a monopod and have a chance to practice, using a slightly slower shutter speed and panning with the runner can produce a great photo.

Don't try to do too much. Decide what you think you can accomplish and concentrate on that.

Remember to take pictures of the fans, or the celebrations after a race.
