I'd appreciate some critique on these. I've got a Canon G6 full spectrum conversion and I'm using an 850nm Neewer filter. I did a bit of post, only adjusting brightness and contrast. I'm just learning using jpg, not brave enough to try RAW yet.

I'll try to give some help; however. Eric is a much better source. I like the images and subjects. They are good subjects for B&W IR. The only suggestions I would make is on the last one would be to crop it so the emphasis is on the building. If you wanted the cliff included it would have been better to shoot from a little further distance and include all of it in the photo. The other suggestion is to keep shooting and posting on this thread. I do like what I see.
Long term I would suggest shooting in RAW. It takes up more memory but one gets better images from it.
Swede
Cloud patterns in IR and B&W.

Old Farmall Tractor..... Much better downloaded.

Mike,
Two nice images and I probably wouldn't have noticed the halo if you hadn't mentioned it. I am a sucker for old tractors, too bad I'm missing the antique tractor and engine show this year in Asheville, too much moving stuff to do.
I don't think the move will ever be finished...

Swede,
Looks like fall color in IR to me. The top of the center tree is just a bit bright though.

Very nice cloud patterns and good use of flare.

I played with that one a little and added some color. The actual converted IR is posted here. I like the color added a bit better. The second post is the same image in B&W.

Thanks for the compliment. I debated whether to post it or not as I wasn't totally happy with the flare.
Could you answer jmccl on his questions above. You are better able to help him than me.

I'm not necessarily the one to provide critique on other's images but I think you could use a lot of local contrast adjustment on the last two. This would be the "clarity" slider in LR for instance. I think the deep ir images scream to have really great blacks and whites. I took all three into LR and with a bit of tweaking they really came alive.
The shoolhouse is really a great shot with the two window side being the charm of the shot and I think it should be the focal point. As noted by Swede, I think cropping the foreground would help focus on the building. Cropping the cliff would also help. The front door once you've boosted the contrast probably will need to be toned down a bit. This is where processing the raw will really help you. You'll be playing with the image in 16 bit.
The dome is an interesting shot as you have a lot of depth. I would personally crop some of the sky and then darken the cliff to the right to separate it from the dome. The foreground could perhaps also be darkened to provide separation from the dome. Once you've boosted the contrast I think the dome lower face - center frame - will start to blow out and probably will need to be toned down a bit. I'm thinking the focal point of this shot is the inverted triangle where the right side of the dome meets the cliff to the right.
Hope this helps a bit. If you do have the raw files you should give it a shot with them. I think you'll be surprised how quickly you catch on ...

JM... The only thing that stands out to me is you need more contrast in the pictures. They appear a little flat. Not sure what you are doing your post processing in, but if you are familiar with using levels, I'd try increasing them. I can show you what I mean on one of your picture if you like. I need your permission to post it though. Great subjects though. Let me know.

Thanks Eric.... I spent about an hour or more trying to get rid of the halo.... No luck...;0) That was shot in raw too. Just too far out of focus for the over hanging leaves.

Love the trees Swede..... Mike
Truckee Meadows Valley, looking north from what we call Windy Hill. Downtown Reno can barely be seen on the left center of the photo. The Atlantis and the Pepper Mill casinos in the center. Second picture is looking more north east from the same spot. Both looks much better enlarged.

Another one I took the other day. Swinging On A pump.

Hi Mike. I appreciate the comments thus far from yourself as well as Swede and UtahBob. Levels? For post processing I use a product from Corel called "Paint Shop Pro". The Corel product was bundled with my "Vista" computer 10 years ago and all I ever do is crop and adjust brightness and contrast. It has more functionality, but I haven't taken the time to learn more. Probably I should try to find some tutorials. Yes, please work with either the old truck or the school house and tell me what you did and why you did it. You can post the results anywhere you want. When I shot these, I just wanted to see how these environments would show up in IR. I liked the results, I'm certainly ready to learn more about tweaking the images. More reading and experimenting for me I guess. Gives me something to occupy my idle hands. I've got Joe Farace's book and now I just need to play and learn. I really appreciate all the help.
