I'm excited about the Samsung Galaxy S. I've played with it in the store and it appears head and shoulders above all the competition. I want to be able to take the SD Card direct from my D90 and plug it in. I tried it at Best Buy with jpegs and it works very well - it's amazing! So I'm ready to buy. Anyone have experience with raw files on an ANDROID DEVICE? Are there apps?

That is why I got the Surface Pro. It is a Windows computer just in a tablet form. I can install all of my normal software on it.

I am running a Samsung tablet, and love it. I can not find any RAW app, but not really looking either. My cameras is a Canon, a little point and shoot Kodak, and the ever present cell phone. The Kodak shots JPG only, and in the Canon I shoot both JPG and RAW. I have Eye-Fi cards in both camera, and auto down load JPG onto my tablet. The to-from the phone is Bluetooth.

The photos can quickly overwhelm the tablet's memory capacity. I look and delete, using the tablet for immediate gratification only. And to satisfy my wife's desire for my pictures so she can do the FaceBook thing. Bluetooth from tablet to either her tablet or phone.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

there just are not a lot of apps for android that can read NEF files. So far, none of these has been very useful to me since they have almost no ability to edit the raw files. you can convert or extract jpeg or png files with a couple of these. I have not tried any of them recently because i decided three things...
1. jpegs out of a Nikon are all i need over 99% of the time.
2. Tablets are not a great platform for photo editing because it sure seems like the software developers are not really photographers.
3. sometimes there is no substitute for the right tools.

What you will need to view your camera's SD card is this:

Please take a look at the post I did a couple of years ago. Before you hop to that link keep in mind I am talking about the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 that comes with a stylus. Also, the connection kit I link to in that post is for the proprietary socket Samsung was using then. the newer Tabs have standard micro USB ports for power and external connectivity.

I have been watching every iteration if the Galaxy Tabs and am really impressed with the S, but I am waiting for the Note version with a stylus. I have not been following the fanboy rumor sites so I don't know if one is in the works. Adobe Photoshop Touch, which I mention in the following link is still available. Link to old post:

I'm primarily interested in showing my photos to my wife and elder family members. Every time I show my wife anything I've shot she says print it. We've already got prints all over the house! I know she wants to show our pics to her Mom (age 95) but this way she could just bring the tablet to her assisted living place. I do my editing in Lightroom.

A digital picture frame might be a more useful tool for you to share pictures with family. I got a big one for my mom, and i send her a new SD card every few months, and each time she writes back, she drops the old card in the envelope. So it sits on her china cabinet scrolling through pictures all the time and there are buttons on the back if she wants to freeze it, or manually advance images.

If you purchase a later model camera, d3200/d5200/d7100 or later, there is either built in wifi or you can get a little bitty wifi adapter made to transfer images to an android or ipad device via an app from nikon. That was one of the selling points of the D5300 i bought in May, and it's a neat toy, it allows me to transfer images from the camera even on locked android devices that won't mount storage. (google nexus) and lots of smart phones that do not support OTG storage devices. My wife uses it to transfer images to her phone to post stuff to facebook.

Most tablets barring Microsoft's Surface (at a premium price) don't have the processing power to edit large RAW files. There was a rumor about Lightroom being ported for this platform but I haven't read any recent developments.

If you want to cycle jpgs you will be fine but more advanced application as mentioned, I'd leave it to more powerful hardware.

Hmmm.... I think you are going to have to sort out your goals here. Do you want the most economical way to show pictures to your wife and Mom-in-Law or are you just adding that as "another really good reason" to get a really nifty new toy?

I think watchcow's picture frame idea is quite good for your Mom's mother. There are quite a few inexpensive models. While a bit pricey this was intrigueing:
http://www.frys.com/product/7338374?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG. But I suspect she may not have WiFi.

Regarding your wife - what kind of TV do you have? Many TVs built in the last several years have a USB port. If yours does, copy the photos to a USB stick and plug it in. If it has the port it will, in all likelyhood, automatically search for photos (and .mp3 music files). We have a 6 year old Sony that works this way, but it does require a Sony branded USB stick.

We also have a Roku2 with an SD card slot. Put the card in and the photos are displayed on the TV (but the quality is better if you can plug directly into the TV.)

But I don't mess around with SD Cards because I have server software (Subsonic) on my Windows 7 desktop that streams photos and music wirelessly through the Roku. Also, the Roku can wirelessly connect to the internet and display photos stored in the Google/Picasa Web Albums cloud.

So.... what is the goal???

I'd like to use part of the darktable manual as it is clearly written

http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch08.html.php

"darktable's memory requirements are high. A simple calculation makes this clear. If you have a 20MPx image, darktable for precision reasons will store this internally as a 4 × 32-bit floating point cell for each pixel. Each full image of this size will need about 300MB of memory. As we want to process the image, we will at least need two buffers for each module – one for input and one for output. If we have a more complex module, its algorithm might additionally require several intermediate buffers of the same size. Without further optimization, anything between 600MB and 3GB would be needed only to store and process image data. On top we have darktable’s code segment, the code and data of all dynamically linked system libraries, and not to forget further buffers where darktable stores intermediate images for quick access during interactive work (mip map cache). All in all, darktable would like to see a minimum of about 4GB to run happily. "

Short version most tablets don't have enough ram cpu power graphics memory or battery life to make raw processing practical. however in 2 or 3 years ...

The Samsung Note takes a mini SD card, your D90 a full size one. You'll have to get a USB to SD to view your D90 shots on the Note.

Or, for $99/year you can get 1 Tb of cloud storage with Dropbox, and use the Android app to access

you can use a micro sd card in your camera with an sdcard adapter they are the same size as a regular sd card with a slot for the micro sd card.
I use a 32gb micro sd card with my camera this way with my camera with no issues.

Another option might be a usb otg cable which has a micro usb plug to go in to the micro usb socket on the tablet and a full size usb socket on the other. A regular card reader can plug into that. However usb host mode is not guaranteed with all android devices. My tablets support it but my phone doesn't.

Or you can get 1 TB for free (with ads) at Flickr:

I have cloud storage space on Dropbox, Sugarsync, Flickr and Google drive, but Flickr is the best deal and has a functional, attractive UI.

The Samsung tablets seem to have very good reviews. As for storing images, especially raw, memory would come into play. The more the better.

Watchcow : When you say"jpegs out of a Nikon are all you need" do you mean you shoot in jpeg 99% and not in RAW?
