My daughter, who was born and raised in Indiana, finds San Diego to be extremely boring because the weather never changes - she misses thunderstorms, snow, and normal green deciduous trees (she says the trees in San Diego look like something out of Dr. Suess)

Perhaps your daughter doesn't know where to go. I can guarantee you won't see this in South Bend in August:

This is about 50 miles East of San Diego.

There are dynamite views from Point Loma of the harbor, downtown, the airport, etc. It also has a photogenic cemetery, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery:

Balboa Park is great for scenery, architecture and people-watching:

I'd second Old Town, too - overly touristy shops, but the old chapel there is picturesque:

And the SD Zoo Safari Park is worth a day, if you like wildlife in more natural settings at all:

One More Thing. I spend half my time in San Diego. October 3,4 and 5 will bring the Navy's Blue Angels to Miramar. Some really great shots. Enjoy you trip.

It was already mentioned but you could spend some serious time at the zoo which covers a lot of ground. Also be aware that the distance from San Diego to Carmel is in the neighborhood of 500 miles and hiway 101 is never quick.

I do not know if it still exists but there is Lion Country Safari. There is Sea World, San Diego Zoo and the beach.
With the exception of the zoo Google the other two to see
if they are still open. There are many photo ops all over
southern California, have fun.

Lion country safari is long gone, but as mentioned, there is the San Diego Wild Animal Park which features mostly wild animals from Africa. San Diego is a beautiful city and you will not have any problems finding great photo ops.

Some more ideas - the San Diego River for birds and other wildlife from its mouth all the way back East to the dam in Mission Trails Park. Also, Mission Trails Park, including Cowles Mountain, early or late in the day. South in Chula Vista starting at the Nature Center and then out onto the salt marsh. The Silver Strand between Imperial Beach and Coronado. Palomar Mountain or Julien for trees. Head East into the desert. Southwest to the Los Coronados Islands off Mexico on a half day boat trip. When you are in San Diego check to see if the whale watch boats are still going out. It will be too early in the season for gray whales, but for most of the summer they were going out after blue whales.

Hi everyone! I need some advice on good photo ops in San Diego and surrounding areas. I want to take some unusual landscape and nature photos. Any suggestions?

Here's a link to a great local photo club, cost nothing to join and they have many good shoots scheduled. Give 'em a look.

Go to La Jolla Cove, between Children's Beach and the Shell Shop. Sunny Jim's Cave is located by taking the stairs down at the Shell Shop. Lots of seals and pelicans, cliffs etc.

If you go in January or February the pelicans are in breeding plumage.

Head to PointLoma, then up the BIG hill to main blvd.... turn left.. to south... go all the way to the end. Parking ,,, etc. Couple light houes..

If u have strong lens.... great.... North Island Naval Air Field.... usually a carrier in there for a 40 day "treat."

Many commercial fish boats.... in the "stream"... plus a dozen "Submarines" very near the mouth of the bay.

Have fun....

I have lived in S.D. for 40 years and I think one of the best books for the area is PhotoSecreats San Diego has all the areas in S.D.covered including Anza Borrego Desert. It not only tells you where to go to shoot but the best time to go and gives you the history also.you can pick it up for $19.00 new probley $10.00 or less used on Amozon. If you would like to get together when you get into town P/M me or contact me at barryrnewmann@yahoo.com I would be glad to show you around.I do work during the day until 4pm but can meet you anytime after that or on the W/E.9 days is not near enought time to see all that S.D has to other.as for Mexico the only way I would go down there is on a cruise ship.hope you have a great trip.

That's right. I went thru it too in my car about 20+ years ago. It was originally called lion county safari. Probably renamed to its duller sounding incarnation.
