I chose my Argus C3 because of it's iconic status among many of us older photographers and it creates some great conversation. I don't think that it really matters whether it is a face or an object but I do think that you should have an avatar. I like being able to glance at the avatar and, among our regulars, know immediately who it is.
Quite frankly, I am more peeved by those who list their location as "in hiding". Why do that? It is nice to know where you are from.

My avatar is very profound. It is a reminder to me when I wore shoes. Those were the days, my friend, those were the days .......
I chose mine because it reminds me of one of the most beautiful fall photo tours I have ever taken. It represents the ever changing beauty of nature and I am a nature/wildlife/landscape photography.

I'm all broken up why someone should ask me this!
Never thought about the symbolism of my AVITAR, so I changed it to a post of a portrait of me shot with a test version of a Sigma Quatropro set on monochrome, no post processing. Shot on a Saturday morning at Professional Camera Repair in Houston, where a bunch of us old geezers gather to have coffee and swap tall tales. Any one in the Houston area is welcome to join us between 8:30 and 10:30.
I use a drawing of a Belted Kingfisher because it is my favorite bird, just sayin.

I used to have that wonderful Ms. Brown M&M avatar, because I related to it...brown, smart, glasses, feminine. Then, one of our wonderful members, in response to a totally unrelated post, gave me attitude for using it because of "copyright". Actually it's a trademark issue. Anyway, I contacted the M&M folks, and they said they could not authorize its use. Understandable. So I changed to a pic if me.
What's an Avatar?..

I change mine from time to time, but they are all pics I took. My current avatar is a pic of one of Burt Rutan's uniquely designed aircraft. It was taken at one of the airshows I attended (probably Oshkosh, since it's the most famous). I've gotten his and his brother's (Dick, who flew around the world non-stop) autographs at different times. This particular aircraft is called The Boomerang. The pilot and passengers sit in one of the cabins and cargo goes in the other one. Also one wing is longer than the other and the tail is also different.

Sometimes, it's tough to figure out what the avatar is. When people change their avatar, I don't "recognize" them. If I don't look at the name, I don't know who they are. It's like facial recognition.
Glad I read your post, Jerry.
I really enjoy photographing animals. My avatar is simply a photo I took of Mom and "baby" at our local zoo last October. It was one of the few on my iPad at the time I joined the UHH. I liked it. I was too lazy to find something else. I posted it as my avatar. End of story.
The other day, I was thinking about changing my avatar. I was holding off because I, too, use members' avatars as a form of facial recognition. Soooo - I'll just keep the avatar I started with.

Good point, Hando Rei. I chose mine because it's one of my favorite shots that I took of a unique foot-bridge and also use it as my Desktop photo. I might scare folks off if I used a photo of myself :)
I had to laugh when I saw this picture of what I chose to be my avatar. Because I live in northern Minnesota and we have such harsh winters, it reminded me of myself...out chasing northern lights, milky way or whatever else we trek out to find.
I thought he looks better than me - and seems to be having fun too!

Mom is a 36 yr survivor and the avatar is for a very special and precious little 7 yr old girl who lost the battle with brain cancer after a very brave and courageous battle for over 4 yrs shortly after her 7th birthday.

Way to go Pete, give your Mom a huge hug for me! From one survivor to another ..... hopefully we'll find a cure for this awful disease soon.... I am the strong, stoic type, used humour and tried to lift spirits, but, seeing all the children undergoing chemo with me always brought me to tears ..... may God Bless their beautiful little souls.
