I use a Canon 300 f4 with a Canon 1.4 extender on a 7D for wildlife action every day and this combo provides fast accurate AF.
Most of the images on my wildlife photography blog were taken using that combo.

I use a tamron 1.4X on the canon 100-400 and do not lose auto focus, works great

Which camera body are you getting the 1.4x to autofocus the 100-400mm on?

I thought it was only the 5dmk3 with firmware update and the 1D bodies that could, I think the OP uses a 7D.

There is the pin taping method but apparently autofocus is quite slow though does work.

After looking at Swamp Gators shots over the years I would go with the 300 f/4 + 1.4x on a 7D

I have a canon T1i, I don't believe canons 1.4X or 2X was intended for use on the 100-400, they do not work nor were they ever intended to. The canon extenders were made for certain canon lenses, it is simple to go to canon and find out. The tamron has no trouble workng with my canon 70-210mm, 100-300mm and 100-400mm

Google," Taping pins on Canon 100-400". Might work on that lens, don't know.
Somewhere I heard you can't tape a mklll ext.
It will focus with a 5dlll, but I know you don't have one.
hondo, why don't you use it without the ext. at 400mm?
A 300 +1.4 only gains you 30mm on a crop cam. Personally, that's hardly worth doing. I think if you aren't happy with what you get with the 400, you won't be happy with the 300. Just my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you do. ;-)

The 400 f/5.6 should focus with bodies that provide AF at f/8. Not sure how fast or what sort of IQ that combination would have.

I had the lens when shooting a Canon 20D and it was very good. It is definitely a sleeper.

Its too bad Nikon doesn't have a similar lens.

I have had the 100-400 for years, the 1.4 works fine on that lens but you lose AF, not IS though.

Hondo did not mention the 100-400 lens.
There is a big difference between the 400 5.6 and the 100-400.
Which one is the subject ??
