ALL lenses 200mm and longer should be focus cal to your body if possible ! When doing a focus cal, make sure you focus at or near infinity each cycle and then on your target. You can use magnified live view to help confirm which direction and how far to go. Detailed soda cans set at a slight angle/depth also makes a good target.

Just find a yardstick, place it at 45 degrees to the lens at around 30 feet away. Shoot at 600mm and wide open with spot AF on the very center of the yardstick. A close look at the image will show whether or not the lens is back-focusing or front-focusing and adjustments are very easy to make from there. You should have a balanced DOF. (Meaning that if you focus on 18", then your DOF should have 17" to 19" well in focus)

This is a new concept for me. Is there a more detailed write-up somewhere? Can these adjustments be made on a D5200?

Sorry, but the D3X00 and D5X00 bodies do not have the AF Fine Tune feature.
