This image shows a Nikkor lens, manufactured by Nikon Company, which supplied Canon with lenses for several years.

Early Canon history:

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/history/canon_story/1937_1945/1937_1945.html

1935: Canon's very first camera, the Hansa Kwanon, used a Nikkor lens. Canon didn't make lenses in the 1930s and 1940s, and instead got them from Nikon. Nikon didn't make cameras until the late 1940s, so no problem. per http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/50mm-f14-afs.htm

The first (Nikkor) camera lens for the 35mm format was produced in 1934 for the Hansa Kwanon Company, known these days as Canon. per http://books.google.com/books?id=u4rXBqSmjPAC&pg=PA155&lpg=PA155&dq=Canon+%22Hansa+Kwanon%22&source=bl&ots=q15f7Fp7ms&sig=tgLvXunARjpGuXl82lz_yLe-X40&hl=en&sa=X&ei=P071U4GJOpe2ogTxwIGYBA&ved=0CCgQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Canon%20%22Hansa%20Kwanon%22&f=false

They still use Nikons F mount in their industrial cameras:

http://petapixel.com/2014/03/24/canons-m15p-cl-offers-monochrome-sensor-nikon-f-mount/

Nothing like openly admitting where to find the best optics! ;)

My understanding is that the first cameras for which Canon produced their own lenses was the A series which included the AE1, AV1, Al1 and I think there was an A1. Canon reps would never admit this and Nikon reps just smiled.
