One of the things I like about this site is that helpful people like MTShooter are direct and to the point. If your skin is thin maybe this isn't a site that you can benefit from. His response is mild compared to some. Not everything comes candy wrapped.

So can we take that advice as your "Take on LIFE" Rude is Rude. No matter how knowledgeable one might be. Why defend it?? RJM

I doubt you remember the New York Times front page declaring "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN". No different that this. Posting false and misleading information never benefits anyone and can harm many down the road. It needs to be addressed directly. If you think OI was harsh then that's your opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs.

Not to be nit picky, but the headline was from the Chicago Tribune, not The New York Times. :)

This isn't a touchy-feely site. This is a site to learn about photography. I have had my hands slapped a number of times for being wrong. I sure as heck remembered why I was wrong and learned something in the process. You haven't seen bullies here because they don't last. For the most part, we are "mature" people seeking information. There are any number of people here who are going to rub you wrong because they call it like they see it. Usually these people are seasoned experts and won't put up with people disbursing wrong information. The moderator is silent but deadly. I've seen a number of people removed for abuse and have been instrumental in a couple of cases. Personally, I don't take someone being direct as a personal attack. You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

To admire knowledge is one thing, to think it acceptable to be crude in conjunction with that knowledge, or to behave in a condescending manner also, is wrong. To suggest that those folks are just thin-skinned and should'nt hang out on this really manly, but rude sight, is just rediculous David < and I've witnessed your own personnal rediculousness on this site many times before. Suggest looking at Tamrom 28-75. It has a great rep and will save you some $$. I do not think it is a VC lens, but I would argue VC, IS, OS, is not an issue on lenses with these focal lengths.

Craig,
You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. The Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 VC lens is a FULL FRAME lens.
Even IF it were a crop sensor lens, the crop factor gets applied at ANY lens mounted on those bodies. Focal length never changes regardless of lens designation, a 24-70 is ALWAYS a 24-70 no matter what body its put on. All that ever changes is the effective field of view that the sensor records. A 24-70mm lens (whether DX or FX) when on a D80 crop sensored body gives an effective equivalent field of view of a 36-105mm lens on a full frame body.

PLEASE refrain from putting forth false information on this forum, we have enough trolls doing that here already.

Jim Harmer at Improve Photography did an article on his favorite Canon lenses (including Tamron). You can find it here http://improvephotography.com/12144/best-inexpensive-canon-lenses/

I use the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (especially for portrait work) and really like it. I was considerably less expensive than its Nikon counterpart--the only way I could afford that lens!

The IQ on the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 without VR is great. To me it is a non-issue. I cannot compare because I don't have a Tamron or Sigma lens. The Nikon 24-70 is one of my favorite lenses.

I agree. This is my go to lens in this range

I have no issues with MTshooter's reply. He's like an old friend in this forum. If an old friend called me an idiot I know he means well and I take no issues with it but if a stranger said I was an idiot then I'd have a completely different and negative reaction to it.

Getting back to OP, the Nikon or Tamron lens might be too much lens for the D80. As others have suggested - upgrade your camera. Thank you.

 I don't think I've seen so many adults argue over such silliness. Some folks are more direct than others and some put out bad information. He corrected his input to admit his description of crop factor was wrong. Some of you sound like little 2nd graders that got your feelings hurt because someone called you a poo poo head. Grow up - we want accurate information. If it's more direct than your sensitive little mind can handle - just skip over it. The adults on this site understand passion and want GOOD information on the gear and how best to use it.

I heard you the first time.

I thought MT was abrupt but not necessarily rude. I guess we have different opinions that we will each stick to.

Amen. An outsider would think that they were attending a class on political correctness rather than a photography blog. Now let's get off of it, please.

I am an experienced photographer who is not perfect. I have been reading this forum for about a year now and have always refrained from posting anything on this forum because of attacks like this. If your wrong your wrong and there are ways to go about telling people they are wrong. When people respond in such manners it usually shows their insecurities with needing to prove they are right. It is a shame this had to be my first post in this kind of forum.
