I got the notice and went to the download page. It showed the new download as 900+ MB, requiring over 5 hours at DSL speed.

I don't recall past updates being so humongous.

Did they screw something up?

The last two updates have been over 900MB, three back was 891MB. You must have one lousy DSL carrier if downloading a file less than a gig takes 5 hours. I just downloaded it and it took around 4 minutes.

My download was completed in a matter of minutes at DSL speed. I have the CC subscription. All this update does is add support for new cameras and lenses and fix bugs.

I still have Lr4.4 and have not learned to use it yet. Learning and doing OK with with Ps CS6. I have FiOS though, so let's hope such a DL is faster. From what I remember though, when I DL'd Lr4.4 to Upgrade 4.0 it took a good 10 minutes. And I think they also sent the whole program as well. The installation took a while as well.

Like some others, I downloaded 5.6 CC (upgrade to 5.5) to my Mac and it installed in less than two minutes. I have found that software company's estimated download times are worst case scenarios to negate a deluge of email / phone complaints about the download taking more time than advertised. It's a litigious world.

I also downloaded 5.6, and the link showed only a 79kbs speed with an estimated time in the 4 hour range. I canceled the download and started over getting a download speed in the 500kbs range. This is slower than my normal download speed, but it allowed me to obtain the update in about 30 minutes. If you haven't already downloaded, you might try restarting it until you get a more reasonable download speed. Good luck!

There are obviously three factors in determining download time: size of the file, speed of your ISP, and the amount of bandwidth the vendor has available on its servers. The early downloads often create a traffic jam as everyone piles on at once. I always wait a few days after a new version comes out in any software. It frees up the bandwidth on the other end, and it allows the rest of the world to beta-test the new files for unwanted changes.

LR doesn't do anything for my workflow so I don't use it, but if it is a new camera RAW update, users of ACR will also be getting updates.
