Well maybe, but I will tell you that I am extremely aware of my surroundings, who else is shooting, and I have stepped away from many opportunities to allow parents the chance to step in and get the pictures they are after.

Well, I didn't mean you personally but in their mind "you" is anyone other than themselves. You sound uncommonly considerate of others, as I try to be.

Fact of humanity: everyone is someone else's ....
idiot
genius
hero
villain
teacher
student
example
cautionary tale

the list can get pretty long. most things one can say about someone else is a matter of perspective rather than fact. Some things are stupid no matter who you are. looking down the barrel of a loaded gun for instance, I can't imagine a place where that makes good sense. Sticking your fingers into moving machinery is another stunt that seems to often end badly.

My all-time worst was a wedding where the bride was raised by a stepmother since about age 2. After all the contracts were signed and the ink was dry, and my speeches about who I work for as a wedding photographer, I show up for the big event. everyone is there, weddings are like shooting fish in a barrel, everyone is dressed up and expects to have their picture taken, so it is all good for the 'tog right?

The biological mother of the bride shows up the morning of the weddign and insinuates herself in the dressing room and starts fussing over her little girls and how everything is all wrong and mommy will make it all better. For some reason no one escorts this drunken crazy woman off the property. She proceeds to push everyone around and carrying on about how everything will be perfect for her little girl's big day. I had the entire day before with the family and took pictures at the brides luncheon and even got some nice posed formals so i think we had a pretty good rapport. When mommy shows up they are just embarrassed about the whole deal and avoid confrontation. I managed to work around this person with minimal impact on the work, but several delays while i have to explain to her that i am working for her little girl and not for her. This came to a head when she starts trying to direct the cake-cutting. That is a job for me or a wedding coordinator if there is one. So i ask everyone to be a little patient while we make some adjustments then have to enlist the help of one of the catering staff and the groom's father to remove this interloper and explain her place as a tolerated guest. She was unhappy, but the bride was very much relieved to have someone stand up for her and the cake cutting and the rest of the reception and receiving line photos went smoothly while mommy sat at a distant table with "Moose and Rocco" to keep her out of the fray.

This turned out to be one of my best wedding sets ever in spite of the hassle, but i was not sure i would make it through that day and evening without getting arrested myself for decking mommy. To add to the insult, on my return to base it was a very long drive so i stopped at a hotel i had used many times and as usual carried my film bag into the room to drop in the fridge. the next morning my truck and $18,000 worth of gear were gone. the Suburban was stolen overnight and all that was recovered was the body minus the engine and transmission and of course all my gear. The insurance company had some clause about how they defined "on the job" and as soon as i drove out of the parking lot of the church, my insurance was not in effect. that put me out of business and i was never able to replace my Hasselblad and Contax cameras or the Comet light system. At least by carrying the bag into the room i saved the pictures.

Wow! What a story! Entertaining as hell, but sad, too. Did you ever get back into the biz?

This really works. Set up one or more manual flashes. So when their cameras start preflashing the flashes go off and their photos are in the dark.

My issue is travel photography. I've begun to identify certain types. As I am often with a tour group I find it annoying with the individual(s) who work their way to the optimum location, take forever to get their shot, then check their image, and then stand there blocking others. And, of course they wear bright colored clothing that is impossible to ignore if they do get in the shot. More prevalent now that people use iPhones and iPads which I do not mind but wish they were aware of others and exercised courteousness.

I've been caught twice by those roadside van and intersection cameras and have thought about mounting a trigger with a flash on it on my dash and one out my rear window. Reckon it'd work? Might be better if I'd just act like the good citizen I ordinarily am and drive right, huh? LOL. There's just something about the throaty growl of a big ol' V8.

Not really, not professionally anyway. that is how I started shooting Nikon gear. It was way cheaper than anything I used professionally, and was readily available. the little settlement I got out of the insurance company for personal property went toward a small lot of used Nikon film gear. I occasionally do weddings and social events like reunions and Bat/Bar Mitzvahs, senior pics, family portraits, little stuff like that. I don't advertise and I get maybe half a dozen paying gigs a year. otherwise, what I consider my responsibility to the community is to do mentoring for aspiring photographers, and I take pictures of baptisms and baby dedications at our church so the families can know it is taken care of not stress about one more detail. I work as a network administrator now as a steady day job to support my family, and the photography is not a vocation anymore, but an avocation.

My brothers graduation. I had a lady stop directly in front of me. A throat clearing and an "excuse me" didn't get her attention, neither did a "mam can you please move". The "LADY GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY" did though.
I don't like to be rude and I understand sometimes people just don't see you there because they are concentrating on what they are looking at / for. But given they should take a moment or two to look around and see if they are in anybodies way is only polite.
More often then not I have people stop just out of frame while I am trying to compose a shot, I notice them and they have the "oh I'm so sorry I don't want to get in your way" expression, usually accompanies by a verbal "sorry" for having to walk in front of me. Granted I hadn't taken a shot and they weren't actually blocking my shots it's nice that they are still trying to stay out of the way and being considerate of my shooting lanes. I always give them a "go ahead" to move across and a polite "it's ok" or "you are fine" to let them know I appreciate them being considerate.

Those always get a "Thank You" from me, too. Just the other day some tourists were insinuating them selves into a photo I was taking of my wife at Lake Tahoe. I am very well aware of rude mentality or lack therof!

Yep, was in Mariposa grove when a very tame deer wandered into my shot under the giants up on top right near Muir's cabin, would have made a special shot with my then new D800e and Zeiss distagon… all of a sudden, two yacking Japanese women, bent over and talking non stop to each other- they couldn't be listening to what ever each one was saying, their speech was non stop and loud , i swear they were talking breathing in.... both crouched over and slowly following the poor deer about 5 feet behind with their *&^%$&* cell phones held out front of them, they must have taken 200 shots each, and then not of the deer with the giant sequoias, I mean there are roughly 30 million deer in the US… but these trees are rare… I just watched, shook my head, and shot the two of them with my finger.

At an event that I was the photographer for one of the sponsors, they gathered the two teams for a group shot, all these people came out of nowhere with their &^%$# phones and got right up front… I figured ok, i'll wait, they are family members etc. but then i noticed, that they'd take the shot, not look around to get out of the way, but stay put! and decide maybe they should take another, look at it, and take another.. this would have kept right on till the group broke up, never giving anybody else behind a chance… …

I was too polite then… now i yell out loud and say "excuse me," "i'll only be a minute" " "every one look here for just a second for the official shot"… then I clear out. Nobody gives you a hard time. Maybe it would work even if you are not- at least you clear out when you are done- who would complain, and if they do.. so what??

I am with you. Turists also have the habit of placing themselves in front of a statue, as an example, to have their picture taken.

Now I have to wait to take my picture as I have no interest in these people.

Or even worse, in a confined space somewhere I may never get back to, people are holding up large iPads, etc, effectively blocking views for the rest of us. They should have to pay an additonal admission fee for the iPad and the space it occupies.

Nope.
The last time I called anybodies customer service was to inquire why my Earthlink DSL Internet access was gone. I got India, I demanded to speak to an American representative.
By Law, they MUST connect you to an American office.
I got Georgia (USA). in less than two hours the guy called me back. Seems the wifey decided to switch the home phone from AT&T to Verizon. AT&T in their infinite tantrums cut the DSL to Earthlink as soon as Verizon let them know we were changing.
Verizon can't provide the service I require for the Internet.
So I went with a Cable modamn. For Internet ONLY. (We have DirecTV)
So far it has been fine. And I'm done with AT&T, completely.
