I'll bet most pro's do not pay for their camera's, they belong to the news agency...or they are heavily subsidized...just like Pro-golfers, tennis players , etc..etc... etc
I play golf but what brand a pro plays really does not matter...they are good with any club...same goes for pro photographers...just watch Dig-Rev videos..of pro-photographer with a toy camera....they do amazing stuff

Canon claims a dominant showing at the Cup:

"A look to the sidelines in Brazil revealed a familiar sight to many sporting event fans — Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras, equipped with iconic white Canon telephoto EF lenses. Throughout the tournament, approximately 70 percent of imaging professionals chose Canon DSLRs and lenses to capture and share the memorable moments of these passionate and prideful soccer matches. Much like The Big Game, in which 75 percent of imaging professionals on the sideline of that gridiron matchup chose Canon equipment."

C'mon you guys, get real, they're all good; it's the photographer that makes the difference! In case you forgot, the camera is only a means to an end. Smilin' Geo.

There ARE some people that use Sony equipment.... I do own (though rarely currently use) a Canon AE-1 Program film camera that was my first 'real' camera (SLR), but when I decided to go to digital due to the cost and relative scarceness of quality film and processing, I looked at several different brands and decided that the A330 was the best fit at the time and have had a couple award-winning pics using it. My upgrade to the A77 had been very satisfying and will eventually move to ff. If I had chosen Nikon, Canon. Pentax, etc. I'd probably stick with them as well. I can still use my Canon prime lenses on my Sony if I want because I have an adapter.

Canon user or not... Facts is facts! Canon did'nt get to be first by being inferior. There are lots of very nice camera systems out there, and be advised, you want to look at SYSTEMS when you look at cameras. Pick a camera with potential for adding on. Myself, I'm almost strictly PENTAX, and very happy that that is the way I've chosen to go... I'm certainly not "in the pack" and I avoid the "CANIKON" debate, Knowing full well that they are both great cameras and great systems.. Pick something you like for the reasons YOU like. There's almost nothing in cameras these days that's REALLY BAD..

Some of you guys are out of your minds if you really think the only reason there was so many Canon shooters at the WC was because Canon was handing out cameras and lenses to anyone who wanted to use it.

Do you seriously think a professional Nikon sports shooter on assignment from a major publication is going to ditch all his Nikon gear because Canon is handing out free loaner gear?!?

Even if that was remotely the case, what would that say about Nikon that a guy would quickly abandon ship and go with Canon?

A pro on assignment uses what he knows and is totally comfortable with. A huge world wide event like the WC is not the time to decide to play around and switch over to an unfamiliar system just because somebody seems to be passing out free loaner gear. You miss some key shoots because you were hitting the wrong button, or couldn't change settings fast enough and you are screwed.

These guys for the most part bring the stuff they use every day with them. It's not hard to put your 600 in it's padded case and check it along with any other luggage. They do it all the time.
And whether they personally own the gear or it's supplied is irrelevant. You use what you know.

Of course Canon (and I'm sure Nikon) was there. Canon CPS members will be offered support for the gear they bring, and I expect there will be loaner equipment available to use while covering the game.

I recently found out that Nikon(?) is going to be offering equipment for rent at Oshkosh next week at the annual aviation convention that I'm going to. I've never used their equipment, but if it's not too expensive I might give it a shot for a day. Someday I'd like to get a G lens for my Sony.

Djack41,

You will also notice this in all other outdoor events, wherever a pool of photographers gather to capture the event. If you haven't noticed lately check out the TV cameras and their lens assemblies on the field.

Db7423,

If "Second Best" is what puts "bread" on the table, I'll choose Canon every time.

The musical genius Frank Zappa's Halloween song comes to mind here…"The Torture Never Stops…"
This is but one of the topics, an endless, muddy, pool of hogshit that I just can't take anymore. I spend, perhaps, one one-hundredth of the time in Hogville I once did. And now I've decided to double down…Please…….take what ever instrument you have and GO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS...

Djack41 used a link to snapsort to justify the superiority of the D4s over the 1D-X. In it's comparison, however, Snapsort didn't even mention speed of focus, so I don't think I can really take Snapsort that seriously. Neither did the DXO comparison. While DXO showed the D4s to be superior in several categories, notably low light shooting, the question would have to be asked, "could I live with a camera that was not quite as good in some categories if it focused immediately and was spot on?"

If the brand you use makes you feel better, so be it. Personally, these "arguments" are tiresome & "the mine is better" statements reflect more on the person making the statement than on the relative worth of the particular brand....

I see two things happening: some make them to rile the "opposition" which is juvenile when you think about it. Others make them to validate a personal choice.

Did you happen to notice the German photographer after the game? He circulated among the German players, coaches and families using what appeared to be a Sony RX-100 (i, ii or iii?). He shot stills (mostly pretty close) and video alike. I haven't seen the results but found it interesting one of Germany's best photographers used such a tool. His flexibility was limited only by his feet. I bet he got some great shots.
