A 35mm DX lens and a 35mm FX lens would produce identical fields of view. And everything else would be identical on a DX sensor, except for some nuances of image quality because they are different lenses.

In other words the DX projects a 35mm image on the sensor and the FX projects a 52.5mm image on the sensor making them "Not Just Alike" ?

No Craug, that's nothing like what he said.
He said both lenses would be the same on an APSC camera.
Are you being deliberately obtuse?

The FOV Is Not Identical on the DX Camera. It Is Not Identical on the FX Camera. I have both of both and just went through the drill with both cameras and both lenses.

The Nikon 105G is a prime lens. It's a macro and a very good portrait lens.

Ditto, was going to say the same thing!!!

The field of view is the same on a DX camera for both 35mm lenses.

For my D5300 I choose the prime 50mm f1:8D for portraits because I shoot the Ms Senior Pageants and the woman feel a little more comfortable with me a little further back.

Also I choose the the 18-55 f 3.5G II DX VR and 55-200 for the on stage and full stage shots f1:4 DX VR. Realize that both are a little soft at the long end

I am very happy with the three. They do the job I need done, especially the 50mm.

My only wish is that I spent more for the next upgrade

So what are your needs? Possibly use this as a guide for the distance at which you are shooting.

I echo most of the posters that recommend 35mm for a crop sensor. Put away the zooms for a while and get used to zooming by getting in close or walking away - it's a great way to learn about composition. You might find later that a 28mm can also work nicely on a crop sensor and if eventually move to full frame you will still have some great primes.

There are many situations where you will need to resort to zooms (like when your leg is in a cast) but primes are usually a better choice.

Ok, folks just ordered my new camera. Ordered Nikon D5300 along with Nikon 70 to 300mm zoom and 105mm Macro.

Trying to decide on prime lens. I have never had a prime. On my old D40X I just used the kit 18 - 55mm lens. I am trying to decide between Nikon 35mm 1.8 or the Nikon 50mm 1.8.

Any thoughts? Would there be much difference between these 2?

Thanks in advance.

There is also a 40 mm Micro Nikkor that could serve well as a prime lens also having the ability to focus very close when needed. It is slower though (f/2.8). There are web pages comparing it with the 35 mm.

The 'AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G'(The only DX Prime in production) is a DX lens so it will be a true 35mm on the D5300 DX crop sensor camera. All the 50mm's are FX lenses so they will be a 75mm crop factor on the D5300. It's a huge gap for the DX owners.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

Please post the two unedited pictures, from a DX camera, taken with two lenses of the same focal length.

I don't have any DX lenses or cameras any more, so I cannot do the test.

Some of us think the info is not correct, so please wait while we negotiate. :-)

Nikon has a great lens simulator:
http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/index.htm

You can plug in your camera body model (DX D5000 Series), select a DX zoom lens with a range that includes both 35mm and 50mm, and move the slider between 35mm and 50mm.

That's funny. A euphemistic way of saying "fight about it"...in a friendly way of course.

I looked at my 2 lenses. The 35mm f/1.8 says DX, while the 50mm has no indication, DX or FX. It does have a DoF scale.

People get so confused with the crop sensor lingo.... They should call the DX sized sensor a "Reduced Field Of View" camera...

Isn't that the truth! Just when I think I have a clue, I realize I don't! Not to jump in on the OP post, but how can a macro lens be a prime lens? I've seen that mentioned several times.
(not saying that isn't true, but doesn't make sense to me)

If a Nikon lens does not say anything, it is an FX lens. And Nikon makes only a few DX primes, like the 35mm, 40mm macro, and 85mm macro. Every Nikon 50mm is a full frame lens.
