The rush of new products is the reason I will skip the model that is next after I make a purchase. I have a D7000 but will not be getting a D7100. I'll wait for the 7200 before looking to upgrade. Same with the D800. I'm sure despite the improvements my 800 will do fine until the 820, or maybe the 900 comes out.

i had a mind set similar to yours for 40 years and drove inexpensive run of the mill used cars.
One day i woke up and realized i could own and operate $70,000 luxury vehicles for just a few dollars more per year.
Same goes for camera gear.

whats to clarify?
My nikormat has a quieter shutter.
My F4 has a brighter viewfinder.
The D4 takes faster frames/sec (i think)
The DF has better low light responce
My DE40 gets more shots per battery charge

If my D800 were any more lacking in the basics i would donate it to the salvation army.
Hmmm, so four cameras each have one thing you regards as better than the 800. Nice troll oldtigger :)

what is a troll?
Reviewing my comments:

“The 800 is a bit of an antique but in the hands of a photographer will bring home the bacon.

“I don't expect to see any drop in the used prices any time son.”
“come on man it isn't a bad camera for a digital.”

“don't get all excited, its still a useful camera; but the body and shutter design is 1960's and the sensor is showing its age.”

“guess anyone buying a D4S, D800E or D810 expecting dynamic range will be rushing out to trade them in on used D800's.”

“Me, i'ld be happy with a fixed mirror and a quieter shutter.
A viewfinder you could actually see through would be nice also.”

“whats to clarify?

“yeh there is a little difference in the bodies. my spotmatic has the prism and lens in the middle where they belong instead of shoved over to the edge so there isn't enough room to hold a D800 with your left hand.”

I don’t see anything there that could be considered “ inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic “
The D800 is just another piece of photographic gear whose market value will now be determined by its ability to do a job rather than by a bunch of add men and fan boys.

Old T, would you care to go over those numbers for us?
I'd like to see how a guy goes from old used cars to $70,000 automobiles, for just a "few" dollars more??

buy a chevy and resell it. you can make enough to take your wife to dinner at a cheap restaurant.
Buy a jaguar and resell it, you can make enough to put your kid through a community college.

Same thing goes for your used camera gear.
Dump it before it hits the backside of the curve.

Yep, if your kid is satisfied with one year of a two year Junior College.

Do you think that when the D810 starts hitting store shelves, the price of the 800/800e will drop? It seemed to me it should but someone told me the 800/800e are still in production until year end so don't expect price movement until 2015. I have no experience with how Nikon prices are effected when a new model variant is introduced.

If you have been following prices for the D800 on ebay, I bet you have seen, or soon will see, a drop in the prices being bid.

Both the demand and the price of the D800 will drop when the D810 becomes available. It will drop even more after the D810 has been on sale for a few months.

At first, people will be looking for good deals on the D800, so prices won't drop very much. As time goes on, prices will drop more because the D810 will be the current model.

But I could be wrong.

i would think reputable used gear dealers would be a better source for predicting the 800 price curve than E-bay.
And my faith in the dealers isn't as strong as it used to be.

After shooting with a Nikon D4, I am switching to mirrorless for landscape, still shots, and portrature: better sensors, better color, less weight, beautiful pictures. Holding on to my D4 for action photography - only.

Mirrorless will take over the DSLRs within 5 years.
